Service jobs and parts

Brake pads, fluid and system check

Brakes · every 160 km or every month

Polaris's chart says inspect brake pad wear every 10 hours, monthly or 160 km, check fluid level before every ride, and change the brake fluid every two years (200 hours, 24 months or 3,200 km). Replace pads at 1 mm of friction material.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Brake fluid1DOT 4. Polaris DOT 4 only; never use a part-used bottle. Aztec Oils match: HYDRATEC DOT 4 BF2872189
Brake pads1Replace at 1 mm. Front kit 2202412 (2 sets, 4 pads) and rear kit 2203451 on the 2010 INTL fiche; earlier years may differ2202412 (front) / 2203451 (rear)
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground with the handlebars straight.
  2. Hand brake: look at the master cylinder window on the left handlebar. Dark means full; clear means low. Keep the level 6 mm below the top edge.
  3. Foot brake: remove the seat and check the level is between the min and max marks.
  4. If low, add DOT 4 only. Do not overfill: an over-full master cylinder can cause brake drag or lock-up. Brake fluid absorbs water, so throw away any opened, unused fluid.
  5. Check for leaks, excess travel or a spongy feel. Do not ride with spongy brakes; see your dealer.
  6. Check the pads and replace them when the friction material is worn to 1 mm. Check the discs for damage.
  7. Have the brake fluid changed every two years.

Tools: Torch, Rule

Engine breather filter and hose check

Engine · every 400 km or every month

Polaris's chart says inspect and clean the engine breather filter every 25 hours, monthly or 400 km. Running without it can damage the engine.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Known problems

Oil pump loses its prime

The dry-sump engine must have its oil pump primed whenever the oil tank to pump hose has been disconnected, or it may not get oil.

Water in the PVT belt drive

Water in the PVT makes the belt slip. Drain and dry it as the manual describes and see your dealer soon.

Water in the recoil housing

Polaris says drain the recoil housing after wet work and before storage.

Over-filled brake reservoir

Polaris warns an over-full master cylinder can cause brake drag or lock-up. Keep the hand brake 6 mm below the top.

Oil choice matters

Polaris says use Premium 4 0W-40, never mix brands, and change oil more often if another oil is used.
