Service jobs and parts

Front prop shaft U-joint greasing

Drivetrain · every 500 miles

Polaris's lubrication guide says grease the front prop shaft fittings every 50 hours or 500 miles, before long storage, and after pressure washing or submerging. The general lubrication of all fittings is every 100 hours or yearly.

PartQtyNotesPart number
U-joint grease1Polaris U-Joint Grease, 3 oz cartridge2871515
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, engine off, key out, parking brake on.
  2. Wipe each grease fitting on the front prop shaft clean.
  3. Give each fitting no more than 3 pumps of U-joint grease.
  4. Wipe off excess grease. Do the same after pressure washing or deep water.

Tools: Grease gun, Rag

Air filter replacement

Engine · every 1,000 miles or every year

Polaris's schedule says replace the air filter every 100 hours, 1,000 miles (1,600 km) or yearly, and the handbook says check it weekly and replace it more often in very dusty work. A filter soaked in fuel or oil must be replaced.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Air filter1Genuine number from a specialist's cross-reference (MFG Supply); the older number 7080595 is also listed. Check your handbook7082101
Step-by-step
  1. Engine off, key out. Lift the back of the seat and pull it back off its tabs.
  2. Undo the six clips and lift off the air box cover. Check the cover gasket sticks firmly all the way round.
  3. Slacken the hose clamp and take out the filter. Wipe out any dirt in the box without letting it fall into the intake.
  4. Put a little general-purpose grease on the sealing edges of the new filter.
  5. Fit the filter on its mount so it sits on the supports, and tighten the clamp to 2 N·m.
  6. Refit the cover and clips. When refitting the seat, make sure its slots engage the tabs on the fuel tank.

Tools: Screwdriver for the hose clamp, Torque screwdriver (2 N·m), General-purpose grease, Rag

Drive belt and clutch (PVT) inspection

Transmission · every 1,000 miles or every year

Polaris's schedule says inspect the drive belt every 100 hours, 1,000 miles (1,600 km) or yearly. The clutches are inspected at the same interval on non-EBS models and every 200 hours on EBS models, by a dealer. Belt slip at low speed in high range is what burns belts.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Drive belt1Only if worn. Genuine number from a specialist's cross-reference (MFG Supply), listed for 2007-on models with EBS; check your handbook for your VIN3211113
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, select PARK, lock the parking brake, stop the engine and take the key out. Let the engine and clutch cover cool.
  2. Take out the outer PVT cover screws and remove the cover.
  3. Look at the belt for loose cords, missing cogs, cracks, glazing, thin spots or hour-glass wear. Compare its width with a new belt.
  4. To remove it, mark the direction of rotation. On EBS models screw the belt tool from the kit into the driven clutch and turn it clockwise to open the clutch; on non-EBS models squeeze the belt in the middle to spread the driven clutch. Walk the belt off.
  5. Clean all dust and debris out of the cover. Polaris warns that debris left inside can cause damage and loss of control.
  6. Fit the belt the same way round, spin the driven clutch 5–7 turns clockwise to seat it, remove the tool and refit the cover at 5 N·m.
  7. Use low range below about 7 mph (11 km/h) and when towing heavy loads, to stop the belt slipping and burning.

Tools: Socket set, Torque screwdriver (5 N·m), Belt removal tool (in the vehicle tool kit, EBS models), Chalk or paint pen, Rags

Brake pads, fluid level and hoses check

Brakes · every 1,000 miles or every year

Polaris's schedule says inspect brake pad wear every 100 hours, 1,000 miles (1,600 km) or yearly, and check the fluid at the 25-hour break-in. Pads are replaced at 0.76 mm.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Brake pads1Replace when worn to 0.76 mm. Front kit 2202412 holds 2 sets (4 pads) for both front calipers; rear kit 2204088 holds 2 pads (2020 fiche)2202412 (front) / 2204088 (rear)
Brake fluid1DOT 4. Polaris DOT 4, 355 ml, from a sealed container. Aztec Oils match: HYDRATEC DOT 4 BF2872189
Step-by-step
  1. Let the discs cool first; they get very hot.
  2. Check the hand brake and foot brake reservoirs are between the fill lines. Do not overfill: Polaris warns an over-full master cylinder can make the brakes drag or lock.
  3. If the level is low and the diaphragm under the cap has not extended, there is probably a leak; have it checked.
  4. Check the hoses and joints for leaks and the brakes for long travel or a spongy feel.
  5. Check the pads and replace them when worn to 0.76 mm (0.030 in).
  6. Clean any grease off the discs with brake cleaner or alcohol only. See a dealer about cracked, corroded or warped discs.

Tools: Torch, Rule or vernier, Brake cleaner, Rag

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 2,000 miles

Polaris's schedule says change the oil and filter every 200 hours or 2,000 miles (3,200 km), after a first change at the 25-hour break-in service. The schedule gives no month figure for this job. Severe use (mud, water, heavy loads at low speed, long idling, short cold trips) halves the interval.

Drain plug sealing washer1Copper washer 5812232, listed with the crankcase socket plug 7052306 on the 2020 Sportsman 570 fiche. Also in the oil change kit5812232
Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground, put the gear selector in PARK and lock the parking brake. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Hot oil burns. Let the engine cool a little, and wear gloves.
  3. Clean round the drain plug, put the tray under the crankcase and take out the plug and washer. Let it drain fully.
  4. Fit a new sealing washer and refit the drain plug at 16 N·m.
  5. Put rags under the oil filter and unscrew it anticlockwise with the filter wrench. Wipe the sealing face on the crankcase clean.
  6. Smear fresh oil on the new filter's O-ring, screw it on by hand until the seal touches, then turn it a further three-quarters of a turn.
  7. Take off the right-hand engine access panel, pull the dipstick and add PS-4 5W-50 until the level is in the SAFE range (about 1.9 L). Do not overfill.
  8. Start the engine and idle for 1–2 minutes. Stop it, check for leaks, then recheck the level and top up to the upper mark.
  9. Take the old oil and filter to a proper disposal point.

Tools: Drain tray (3 L), Oil filter wrench (Polaris PU-50105 or similar), Socket set, Torque wrench (16 N·m), Funnel, Gloves, Rags

Spark plug inspection

Engine · every 2,000 miles

Polaris's schedule says inspect the spark plug every 200 hours or 2,000 miles (3,200 km) and replace it as needed. A worn or wet-fouled plug causes hard starting and misfires.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Spark plug1NGK MR7F, gap 0.76 mm. Genuine number from a specialist's cross-reference (MFG Supply)3022662
Step-by-step
  1. Let the engine cool completely; the exhaust and engine burn. Take the key out.
  2. Turn the plug cap a quarter turn and pull it off by the cap, not the lead.
  3. Unscrew the plug anticlockwise and look at it. A dry, light tan tip is normal; a wet, black tip means it is fouled.
  4. Check the gap is 0.76 mm (0.030 in). Replace the plug if it is worn or damaged.
  5. Screw the plug in by hand first, then tighten it to 12 N·m. Refit the cap.

Tools: Plug socket, Feeler gauge, Torque wrench (12 N·m), Gloves

Transmission oil change

Transmission · every 2,000 miles

Polaris's schedule says check the transmission fluid every 100 hours, 1,000 miles or yearly, and change it every 200 hours or 2,000 miles (3,200 km). Check the level is right at the 25-hour break-in service.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Transmission oil1Polaris AGL Gearcase Lubricant & Transmission Fluid, 0.95 L. 1 qt bottle2878068
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, select PARK and lock the parking brake. Engine off, key out.
  2. The fill plug is on the left behind the footwell; the drain plug is on the right. Clean round both.
  3. Put the tray under the gearcase, take out the drain plug and let it drain fully. Clean the plug and refit it at 16 N·m.
  4. Take out the fill plug and slowly add AGL until it reaches the bottom of the fill hole threads (about 0.95 L).
  5. Refit the fill plug at 16 N·m, check for leaks and dispose of the old oil properly.

Tools: Drain tray, Socket set, Torque wrench (16 N·m), Oil pump or squeeze bottle, Rags

Front gearcase (Demand Drive) fluid change

Transmission · every 2,000 miles

Polaris's schedule says change the front gearcase fluid at the 25-hour break-in service and then every 200 hours or 2,000 miles (3,200 km), checking it every 100 hours. Change it every 25 hours if you use ADC (descent control) for long periods, on hilly ground, or as your main AWD mode.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Demand Drive fluid1Polaris Demand Drive Fluid, 265 ml. 1 qt bottle2877922
Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, select PARK and lock the parking brake. Engine off, key out.
  2. The fill plug is on the right side of the Demand Drive unit and the drain plug is underneath on the right.
  3. Take out the fill plug, then the drain plug, and let it drain fully. Clean and refit the drain plug at 26 N·m.
  4. Fill with Polaris Demand Drive Fluid to the bottom of the fill hole threads (about 265 ml). Use only this fluid; others can stop AWD working properly.
  5. Refit the fill plug at 26 N·m and check for leaks.
  6. If the front gearcase is noisy in ADC mode, change the fluid; if the noise stays, see a dealer.

Tools: Small drain tray, Socket set, Torque wrench (26 N·m), Oil pump or squeeze bottle

Valve clearance check

Engine · every 5,000 miles

Polaris's schedule says inspect and adjust the valve clearance every 500 hours or 5,000 miles (8,000 km), and marks it as a job for a Polaris dealer or other qualified person.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Valve cover gasket1Polaris valve cover seal 5415279 (2020 fiche)5415279
Step-by-step
  1. Have this done by a Polaris dealer or a qualified mechanic with the service manual. The owner's handbook does not give the clearance figures.
  2. The engine must be cold for the check.

Tools: Service manual, Feeler gauges

Brake fluid change

Brakes · every 2 years

Polaris's schedule says change the brake fluid every 2 years. Brake fluid takes up water, which lowers its boiling point and rusts the system.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Brake fluid1DOT 4. Polaris DOT 4, from a sealed container. Aztec Oils match: HYDRATEC DOT 4 BF2872189
Step-by-step
  1. The handbook does not give the bleeding steps; have a dealer do it, or follow the service manual.
  2. Both the hand-lever system and the foot-brake system need fresh fluid.
  3. Brake fluid damages paint and plastics: wipe up spills at once.

Tools: Bleed tube and jar, Ring spanner for bleed nipples, Rags

Coolant change

Cooling · every 5 years

Polaris's schedule says change the coolant every 5 years, check the level every 100 hours or yearly, check its strength each season and pressure-test the system yearly.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Coolant1Polaris Antifreeze 50/50 Premix, 2.5 L. 1 gal bottle2880513
Step-by-step
  1. Never take off the pressure cap while the engine is warm or hot: escaping steam and coolant scald.
  2. The pressure cap is under the front box. The handbook does not give the full drain and bleed steps; have a dealer do it, or follow the service manual.
  3. Use only 50/50 premix, undiluted. For top-ups, fill the recovery bottle; if it has run dry, also check the radiator.
  4. Always refit the correct Polaris pressure cap; a non-standard cap stops the recovery system working.
  5. Coolant is poisonous to animals: catch it all and dispose of it properly.

Tools: Drain tray, Funnel, Antifreeze tester

Known problems

Burnt drive belts

Polaris says belt slip at low speed in high range makes the heat that destroys belts and clutch covers. Use low range below about 7 mph and for towing heavy loads.

Water in the PVT

If water gets into the belt drive, remove the PVT drain plug, refit it, then rev gently in PARK for 10–15 seconds to dry the belt. If the belt still slips, have it serviced.

Front gearcase noise in ADC

Heavy ADC (descent control) use wears the Demand Drive fluid. Change it every 25 hours if you use ADC a lot, and see a dealer if noise continues.

Mixing oil brands

Polaris warns that mixing brands or using a non-recommended oil can cause serious engine damage. Stick to PS-4 5W-50 and always change the filter with the oil.

After the quad has been submerged

Polaris says take it to a dealer before starting. If you must start it, dry the air box, fit a new filter, take out the plug and crank it over to clear water, then have the fluids changed promptly.

Over-filled brake reservoir

An over-full master cylinder can make the brakes drag or lock. Fill only to the line.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your quad.
