Winter storage and frost protection

Storage · every year

Portek's storage steps: flush with clean water, blow the lines out with compressed air, run anti-freeze through until it comes out coloured, then store inside.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Anti-freeze1A small amountcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Wear gloves and eye protection. Fill the tank with clean water, run the pump and spray through the lance and boom until clean water comes out.
  2. Blow out the hoses with compressed air to remove the water.
  3. Pour a small amount of anti-freeze in the tank and run the pump until coloured liquid comes out of every spray end.
  4. Close the spray ends so the anti-freeze stays in. Disconnect the battery clips.
  5. Store inside, clean and dry in a ventilated place. If a boom hangs lower than the tank, stand the sprayer on pallets.

Tools: Compressor with air line, Pallets, Chemical-resistant gloves

Sprayer test (NSTS) if a boom is fitted

Legal · every 6 years

Hand-held lances are outside the NSTS cycle but must be checked regularly. If you fit a boom of 3 m or less, NSTS puts it on a 6-year test cycle, with the first test before it is 5 years old (Welsh Government guidance on NSTS categories).

Step-by-step
  1. If you use the lance only, skip this test but check the hose, lance and regulator for leaks before each season.
  2. With a boom fitted, book an NSTS test before it is 5 years old and then every 6 years.
  3. Clean the sprayer fully before the test. Wear gloves and wash your hands afterwards.

Tools: Nozzle brush, PPE as the last chemical label says

Decontaminate after use

Spray system · when needed

Portek says the tank, pump, hoses and lance must be decontaminated after every use, to stop residues damaging crops and corroding or blocking the sprayer. There is no hour interval.

Tank cleaning agent1As the chemical label recommendscheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Wear the PPE the chemical label asks for. Portek says PPE must still be worn while cleaning.
  2. Clean in the field just treated or somewhere that cannot contaminate water, streams or crops.
  3. Drain the tank and rinse it; pressure-wash the inside.
  4. Fill with clean water and spray it through the boom and lance.
  5. Add cleaning solution, run the pump 5–10 minutes to mix, then leave it in the tank about 8 hours.
  6. Soak nozzles, screens and filters in cleaning solution and brush them. Never blow through a nozzle by mouth or clear it with wire.
  7. Refit and rinse the whole system with clean water. Wash gloves before taking them off and wash your hands.

Tools: Pressure washer, Bucket, Nozzle brush, Chemical-resistant gloves, Face or eye protection

Clean the suction strainer and nozzles

Spray system · when needed

Portek says clean the suction strainer on the pump suction line periodically, and clean nozzle filters, tips, caps and gaskets by soaking and brushing. Replace any nozzle whose output is more than 10% off.

Basket filter (tank neck)1Genuine Portek088/045
Step-by-step
  1. Disconnect the battery clips. Wear chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection.
  2. Unscrew the suction strainer lid, take out the filter and flush it under clean running water.
  3. Soak the nozzle tips, caps and gaskets, brush them and let them dry.
  4. Refit, reconnect and check each nozzle's output with a jug: replace or clean any that is more than 10% out.
  5. Wash gloves before taking them off and wash your hands.

Tools: Nozzle brush, Bucket, Measuring jug, Stopwatch, Chemical-resistant gloves

Check mounting straps

Mounting · when needed

Portek says check the tank is still secure after the first 15 minutes of work and re-tighten the ratchet straps. A loose 107 kg tank can tip a quad.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Ratchet straps2Replace if frayed; Portek number not listedcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the quad and take the key out.
  2. Check both ratchet straps are tight and not frayed, and the tank has not shifted.
  3. Check the full weight is within the quad's rack limit in its handbook. Do not drive across slopes.

Known problems

Pump cycling

If the pump keeps switching on and off, nozzle delivery is too low for the pressure. Turn the regulator down or change the nozzle: cycling shortens battery and motor life.

Run with the regulator open

Portek says open the regulator fully before running the pump to avoid premature pump wear.
