Service jobs and parts
PTO shaft and overload clutch check
PTO shaft · every 8 hours
Pöttinger's drive shaft instructions say grease the shaft regularly, keep the guards whole and chained. The cardan shaft has a 1,500 Nm overload clutch on the 302.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
- Grease the cross joints and profile tubes.
- Check the guards are complete, turn freely and are held by their chains.
- Check the overload clutch slips rather than being seized after storage. Do not change its setting (1,500 Nm).
Tools: Grease gun, Rag
Blades, blade bolts and blade holders check
Blades and skids · every 10 hours
Pöttinger: check the blades, blade bolts and blade holders before every start-up, during work on stony ground, straight after hitting an obstacle and at once if you hear grinding from the cutterbar. Worn bolts and holders can let a blade fly off.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mowing blades | 2 | Per disc, always in pairs, marked R or L. Genuine Pöttinger: check your handbook or dealer | check your handbook |
| Blade bolt | 1 | If under 15 mm or worn at the bottom. Genuine Pöttinger: check your handbook | check your handbook |
| Blade holder | 1 | Genuine Pöttinger, listed by Partao for NOVACAT 301 and 302. Replace if worn to the edge of the hole | 434131 |
Step-by-step
- Lower the mower, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until every disc has stopped.
- Look at every blade. Uneven wear between the two blades on a disc unbalances it: replace both.
- Measure the blade bolts. Replace a bolt under 15 mm diameter or worn at the bottom.
- Replace a blade holder when wear reaches the edge of the hole.
- To change a blade: put the lever between the disc and blade holder at a right angle to the ground (position A) and swing it level with the disc (position B) to push the holder down.
- Take the blade off, clean crop and dirt from round the bolt and out of the hole, and check the blade's sides are not bent.
- Fit the new blade with the same R or L marking, its arrow matching the disc's rotation. Check it sits between the bolt and holder, then swing the lever back and take it out.
- Put the lever back in its bracket on the frame.
- Retighten all bolts after the first hours of use, especially the blade bolt connections.
Tools: Pöttinger blade-change lever (kept on the frame), Vernier caliper, Gloves
Conditioner tines, rollers and belt check
Conditioner · every 50 hours
Pöttinger: grease the RC roller conditioner drive every 50 hours, check the tine fixings on the ED tine conditioner for wear, and always replace the belts as a full set.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conditioner tines, bolts or spring pins (ED) | 1 | If worn. Genuine Pöttinger: check your handbook | check your handbook |
| Conditioner drive belts | 1 | Complete set only, if damaged or worn. Genuine Pöttinger: check your handbook | check your handbook |
| Grease | 1 | For the RC drive | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs and rotor have stopped.
- ED tine conditioner: check the V-belt tension. It is right when the marker point is flush with the shim.
- ED: check the tine fixings for wear and replace worn tines, bolts or slotted spring pins. Use position Z2 (tines turned 180°) if crop wraps the rotor.
- RC roller conditioner: grease the drive every 50 hours.
- RC: check the drive belt and tension pulley. The pulley must run parallel to the belt, especially after first use or any change to the drive.
- Replace damaged or worn belts as a complete set.
Tools: Grease gun, Spanners, Torch
Cutterbar oil change
Gearbox · every year
Pöttinger: change the cutterbar oil after the first 50 hours, and then by 100 hectares at the latest. The winter list says change or top up the gear oil. Too much oil overheats the bar; too little does not lubricate it. There is no filter.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil SAE 90 | 1 | NOVACAT 302: 3.0 L; 352: 3.5 L; 402: 3.9 L. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Do it with the oil warm. Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped. Park on firm, level ground.
- Tilt the cutterbar as far as it goes, remove the drain plug and let it drain fully. It takes a while.
- Refit the drain plug.
- Lift one side of the bar and prop the whole length so it is exactly level across its width.
- Fill with the right amount of SAE 90 through the filler.
- Leave it about 15 minutes, then check: the oil should reach the lower edge of the level screw marked OIL LEVEL. Add only what is missing.
- Dispose of the old oil properly.
Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Stand or prop for the cutterbar, Funnel, Spirit level
Angular gear 1 and 2 oil change
Gearbox · every year
Pöttinger: change the oil in both angular gears after the first 50 hours and then by 100 hectares at the latest, and top up the level once a year under normal conditions.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gear oil SAE 90 | 1 | Angular gear 1: 1.25 L; angular gear 2: 0.8 L. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped. Warm oil drains better.
- Remove the drain plug of each angular gear and let the oil run out.
- Refit the drain plugs and fill with SAE 90: 1.25 L in angular gear 1 and 0.8 L in angular gear 2.
- Check the level at the level plug and refit it.
Tools: Drain tray, Spanners, Funnel
Winter storage
Storage · every year
Pöttinger's winter storage list.
Step-by-step

- Change or top up the gear oil.
- Grease all points on the lubrication chart and run the machine briefly.
- Protect bare metal against rust and grease the ram rods.
- Store it under cover.
Tools: Pressure washer, Grease gun, Rust preventer

Known problems
Overfilling the cutterbar
Pöttinger warns too much oil makes the cutterbar overheat. Fill with the bar exactly level and wait 15 minutes before checking.
Worn blade holders
A blade holder worn to the hole edge or a bolt under 15 mm can let a blade fly off. Check before every start-up.
Discs run on
Wait until every disc has stopped before lifting a guard.
Repair guides
- Blades, blade bolts and blade holders: wear check and change (Easy, 30 minutes to 2 hours): Abrasive or grinding noises from the cutterbar, uneven cut, vibration, a blade loose on its bolt, or a blade lost in the field.
- Cutterbar overheating or noisy: oil level (Easy, 1 hour (including 15 minutes' settling)): The cutterbar runs hot, oil weeps from seals, or it is noisy.
- Overload clutch slipping, clogging and collision safety (Easy, 15 minutes to 1 hour): The cardan shaft overload clutch slips, the cutterbar or conditioner clogs, or the bar swings back after hitting an obstacle.
- Conditioner tines, belts and roller drive (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Conditioner tines broken or loose, crop wrapping the rotor, belts slipping or squealing, or poor conditioning.
