Service jobs and parts
Safety breakaway and greasing
Frame · every 8 hours
PZ: grease daily in use, including the PTO shaft and the swath disc if fitted, and check the safety breakaway works every day in the season.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Multi-purpose grease | 1 | Good tacky grease | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the drums have stopped.
- Grease the four nipples, the PTO shaft and the swath disc if fitted.
- Check the breakaway pivots back freely. Reset it by stopping and reversing.
- If it trips in heavy crop without hitting anything, tighten the spring with nut 8 (CM 186: nut 24).
Tools: Grease gun
Blades and blade holder check
Blades and skids · every 10 hours
PZ: every drum must carry its full set of blades, all new or equally worn, sitting properly over the holder pins. Renew blade holders when the pins are more than half worn. Unbalanced drums vibrate and wreck bearings.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blade, left drum | 3 | Genuine PZ | TF 70 |
| Blade, right drum | 3 | Genuine PZ | TF 71 |
| Blade holder | 1 | If the pin is more than half worn. Genuine PZ: check your parts book | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Lower the mower, stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until both drums have stopped.
- Check every blade. Each has two edges: when one is worn, turn it over on the same drum.
- Keep the blades on a drum all new or all equally worn.
- Check the blade holder pins. Renew a holder when its pin is more than half worn.
- Use the detachment tool to fit or remove blades and make sure each blade sits right over its pin.
- Replace damaged or badly worn drums or holders straight away: the drums are balanced at the factory.
Tools: PZ blade detachment tool, Gloves
V-belt tension
Drive · every 10 hours
PZ: tighten the belts when gap X goes over 3 mm. Overtightening damages the gearbox input shaft and main drive bearings.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| V-belts | 1 | If worn. Genuine PZ: check your parts book | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the drums have stopped.
- Measure gap X. If it is over 3 mm, adjust with nuts 9 and 10 until it is about 1 mm.
- Do not overtighten.
- If the belts still slip at the right tension, slow down.
Tools: Spanners, Feeler gauge or rule
Drum skirts, saucers and transport strips
Blades and skids · every year
PZ: the drum skirts wear where the blade holders bolt on, and the transport strips under the drums must be renewed before wear lets the drum itself be damaged.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saucer (skid disc) | 1 | Removed to move the blade holders; genuine PZ | TT 20 |
| Blade holder nut | 1 | Use original nuts when moving holders | ND 2083 |
| Transport strip | 2 | Per drum | TT 66 |
| Transport strip bolt | 1 | Original bolts only | ND 1013 |
Step-by-step
- Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the drums have stopped. Prop the mower securely before working underneath.
- Check the drum skirts where the blade holders fix. If wear is heavy, take off the saucers (TT 20) and move the blade holders round so the blades meet unworn metal. Use original nuts ND 2083.
- Check the two transport strips (TT 66) on each drum. Renew them before wear reaches the drum. A strip can be reused on the opposite drum. Fit with original bolts ND 1013.
- Check the saucers for wear and cracks.
- Check the cutting head lid bolts are tight so the frame stays rigid.
Tools: Spanners, Torque wrench, Gloves
Gearbox grease level
Gearbox · every year
The CM 185/186 gearbox runs in PZ Cyclo EP-O semi-fluid grease, not oil, and needs no routine change. Only top up if needed.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grade 0 EP grease | 1 | NLGI 0 EP grease. PZ Cyclo EP-O or equivalent, top-up only. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM EP 0 | check your handbook |

- Top up with PZ Cyclo EP-O or an equivalent grade 0 EP grease only if low.

Known problems
Unequal blades
Mixing new and worn blades on one drum unbalances it. Keep each drum's set the same.
Never tilt it back
PZ says run the mower level or slightly forward. Tilted back it recuts the stubble and wears the saucers.
Overtight belts
Overtightening the belts damages the gearbox and drive bearings.
Repair guides
- Blades and blade holders: turning, changing and moving holders (Easy, 30 minutes to 2 hours): Poor cut, blades worn or missing, blade holder pins worn, or drum skirts worn where the holders bolt on.
- Drum vibration or change in sound: balance and transport strips (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Abnormal vibration or a change in the sound of the drums, the cutting head lid loose, or the transport strips under the drums worn.
- Safety breakaway tripping and V-belts slipping (Easy, 30 minutes): The mower swings back in heavy crop without hitting anything, the breakaway does not reset, or the belts slip.
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your implement.
