Service jobs and parts

Daily grease: floor, rotor and drive shaft bearings

Lubrication · every 8 hours

Richard Western's service schedule: every 8 hours or daily, grease the floor chain tensioner bearings, drive shaft support bearings, floor drive shaft bearings, rotor top and main rotor bearings, chain drives, rear thrust bearing, rocking beam pivots (if fitted), the input and rotor PTO shafts and the parking brake mechanism.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, remove the key and fit the cylinder locks if you are working under a raised bed or hood.
  2. Grease every point shown on the lubrication pages for your model, including the PTO shafts.
  3. Grease the idler shaft and parking brake mechanism (Delilah).
  4. On the DS, grease the rotor shaft bearings by the remote points and the lower twin-bearing shaft.

Tools: Grease gun

Floor drive and rotor gearbox oil level

Gearbox · every 8 hours

Richard Western: check the floor drive gearbox oil level and the rotor gearbox oil level daily and top up as needed.

Step-by-step
  1. Park level.
  2. Check the level at each gearbox sight glass or level plug.
  3. Top up if low and look for leaks.

Tools: Funnel, Rag

Floor chain tension

Floor · every 40 hours

Richard Western's weekly schedule includes adjusting the floor chain tension. The chains should be equally tight; with the chain lifted in the centre of the body there should be about 100 mm of free play.

Step-by-step
  1. Lift each floor chain in the middle of the body and measure the play.
  2. Adjust the tensioners so both chains have equal tension and about 100 mm free play.

Tools: Spanners, Tape measure

Weekly checks: wheels, tyres, hoses, lights, nipples

Chassis · every 40 hours

Richard Western's weekly list: check lights, wheel nut torque, hydraulic hose and air line condition, connections to the tractor, towing eye condition, tyre pressure and condition, grease all nipples on the running gear, and check for loose nuts and bolts. Drain water from the air tank daily on air-braked machines.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the lights, 7-pin plug and reflectors.
  2. Check wheel nut torque, tyre pressures and tyre condition.
  3. Look at every hydraulic hose and air line and the towing eye for wear or damage.
  4. Grease the running gear nipples and the brake actuators.
  5. Check nuts and bolts for tightness.

Disc and tee gearbox oil change (DS disc models)

Gearbox · every 500 hours or every year

Richard Western, disc spreaders: change the SAE 90 oil in the disc gearbox and the tee gearbox after the first 50 hours, then every 500 to 800 hours or yearly. The tee gearbox takes about 4 litres. Fill to the middle of the sight glass, wait, recheck and top up until the level holds, so the oil reaches the outer casings.

Step-by-step
  1. Run the machine briefly so the oil is warm, then stop and isolate it.
  2. Drain the disc gearbox and tee gearbox into a tray and refit the plugs.
  3. Refill with SAE 90 to the centre of the sight glass and wait for it to settle.
  4. Recheck and top up until the level stops changing.

Tools: Drain tray (10 L), Spanners, Funnel

Rotor chain oil reservoirs and chain tension (DS)

Drive · every month

Richard Western: each side of the disc spreader has a reservoir that oils the drive chains. Keep them filled with SAE 30 oil (the dripper rate is set with brushes under each chain cover). Check chain tension in the side casings periodically: 25 to 30 mm movement is acceptable. Turn the oiler switch on when you start spreading. No hour interval is given, so this uses monthly.

Step-by-step
  1. Fill the reservoirs on each side with SAE 30 oil.
  2. Check the dripper is feeding the chain brushes.
  3. Check chain play in the side casings and adjust if more than about 30 mm.

Tools: Funnel, Spanners

Brake clearance, wear and adjustment

Brakes · every 3 months

Richard Western: every 3 months check the brake clearance and wear and adjust the brakes. ABS systems also need the components and system checked for damage and air leakage every 3 months, with wiring, piping and sensor checks yearly and the modulator and solenoid replaced every 2 years.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the brake clearance and lining wear at each wheel.
  2. Adjust the brakes.
  3. On ABS machines, test the whole system for air leakage and look for damage.

Tools: Spanners, Axle stands

Hub caps, wheel bearings and suspension U-bolts

Axles · every 6 months

Richard Western's six-monthly list: check the axle hubcaps and wheel bearing wear and tighten all suspension U-bolts and spring drawbar U-bolts. Yearly, check the suspension; every 2 years lubricate the wheel bearings.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the hubcaps and wheel bearing play.
  2. Tighten the suspension and drawbar U-bolts to the torque on your axle plate or manual.
  3. Every second year strip, clean and repack the wheel bearings.

Tools: Torque wrench, Axle stands

PTO shear bolts

PTO · every year

Richard Western: the PTO driveshafts have shear bolts that break in a severe blockage. Always replace the bolts after use. All are grade 8.8: higher grades must not be used. On SDS machines there are extra shear bolts under the front cover. The maker gives no interval; check spares yearly.

Step-by-step
  1. Replace sheared bolts with grade 8.8 only.
  2. Keep spare bolts by the drive input.

Tools: Spanners

Laying up protection

Storage · every year

Richard Western's laying-up list: protect all electrical connections, clean down the machine, repaint areas where paint is removed, replace worn or damaged parts and decals, grease all bright parts and cover the ends of the quick-release connectors.

Step-by-step
  1. Wash the machine down.
  2. Protect the electrical connections and cover the quick-release hydraulic connectors.
  3. Touch up bare paint, replace worn parts and decals.
  4. Grease all bright parts.

Tools: Pressure washer, Touch-up paint, Grease

Rotor blades and tips (FBS and Delilah)

Rotor · when needed

Richard Western: replace the FBS rotor blades when worn to prevent damage to the auger, and always use new nuts and bolts. Fit from the bottom of the flighting upwards. On the Delilah, reverse the paddles and tips as they wear, so the spread pattern stays good. No hour interval.

Step-by-step
  1. Fit the cylinder stop and isolate the machine before working under the hood.
  2. Remove all the old blades. Fit the new ones from the bottom of the flighting upwards, with new nuts and bolts.
  3. Mount blades on top of the flighting. The leading edge of the flight is plain and the trailing edge chamfered.
  4. Fit like blades opposite each other to keep the rotor in balance.

Known problems

Hood and rotor access

Always fit the cylinder stop before working under a raised rear hood.

Grade 8.8 shear bolts only

A stronger bolt will not shear and the machine pays for it.
