Service jobs and parts

Grease DD roll bearings and drawbar/axle cylinder (10 hours)

Lubrication · every 10 hours

Simba's lubrication table puts the DD roll bearings (DD700) and the drawbar/axle cylinder at 10 hours. The table was scrambled in the copy I read, so check your handbook if it differs. Daily greasing of the axle bearings is also called for in the double disc axle section.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Lithium complex EP2 grease. Simba cartridges. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM COMPLEX B-EP 2P12710
Grease nipple (disc hub)1M8 nipple, Simba partP12900
Step-by-step
  1. Park on firm level ground, lower the machine and stop the tractor.
  2. Wipe the nipples clean and grease the DD roll bearings and the drawbar/axle cylinder. Simba marks 'one pump only' on the page.
  3. Do not clean the roll or disc bearings with a high-pressure hose or direct water jet: the housings and ball bearings are not watertight.
  4. Check the scrapers are set so they clear dirt from between the DD rings and do not touch the spacer, even under load.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Disc blades and arms: wear check and replacement

Wear parts · every 10 hours

Simba's disc arms are shear-bolt protected. Check the discs for wear and cracks each day, and replace blades when they are worn small.

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the machine and make it safe. Wear eye protection and gloves; disc edges are sharp.
  2. Look over each disc blade for wear, chips and cracks, and for broken shear bolts at the arm.
  3. Replace worn blades in pairs on the same frame so depth stays even, using the correct disc size for your frame.
  4. The part numbers are from the 5.5 m disc frame page of the parts list; check them against your frame length.

Grease wing and drawbar pivots, disc pitch adjusters (50 hours)

Lubrication · every 50 hours

Simba puts the wing and drawbar pivots and the disc pitch adjuster at 50 hours. Inspect the hub caps, seals, pivot bolts and track bolts twice a week or every 50 hours, whichever comes first.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Lithium complex EP2 grease. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM COMPLEX B-EP 2P12710
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the machine and make it safe.
  2. Grease the wing pivots, drawbar pivots and disc pitch adjusters.
  3. Check the hub caps, seals, pivot bolts and all tracking bolts for tightness.

Tools: Grease gun, Spanners

Disc hub grease and disc angle jacks (200 hours)

Lubrication · every 200 hours

Simba's lubricants page says disc hubs need greasing every 200 hours with lithium complex EP2 grease and the labyrinth-type seal, or every 50 hours with ordinary agricultural grease. The disc angle adjusters and the DD light roll bearings are also at 200 hours. Grease each hub until grease shows at the seals.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Lithium complex EP2 grease. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM COMPLEX B-EP 2P12710
Step-by-step
  1. Lower and make the machine safe.
  2. Grease each disc hub until fresh grease shows at the seals.
  3. Grease the disc angle adjustment jacks and, on the DD light roll, the roll bearings.
  4. If you use ordinary agricultural grease rather than lithium complex EP2, do the hubs every 50 hours instead.

Disc hub bearings: check and adjust

Discs · every 200 hours

Simba says check disc hubs regularly for tightness and the bearing seals for correct orientation. A hub with 0.1–0.2 mm of play at the rim is fine and does not shorten bearing life.

Step-by-step
  1. Raise the disc frame onto the transport wheels and block it.
  2. Check the stub axle is clean and the nut and outer bearing slide on easily.
  3. Tighten the crown nut by hand spanner while turning the hub, until the bearing just drags. Some drag from the seal is normal. No torque figure is given.
  4. Back the nut off to the next locking position, fit the retaining pin and check the hub turns freely with 0.1–0.2 mm play at the rim.
  5. Brake and wheel hub work should be done by an authorised Simba dealer.

Tools: Hand spanner for the crown nut, Pin punch, Grease gun

Wing circuit pressure check

Hydraulics · every year

Simba says normal wing pressure is 10–20 bar with a factory setting of 15 bar. Machine bouncing means too much pressure; wings riding up means too little.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Hydraulic oil1Total AZOLLA ZS 32 in the machine circuit. Mixes with tractor oil. Quantity: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Run the tractor at a low oil flow (tickover). Use the adjuster in the manifold block (valve 3).
  2. Unscrew the adjuster until there is no resistance, unfold the wings and turn it clockwise to raise the pressure.
  3. Start low and work up. Partly fold the wings, stop, then unfold again to check the gauge settles at the set pressure.
  4. Check the hoses and the whole hydraulic system before every use.

Tools: Pressure gauge, Screwdriver

Wheel nuts, tyres and brakes

Running gear · every year

Simba gives 270 N·m for the wheel nuts, 500/50-17 14-ply tyres at no more than 3.5 bar, and says the brakes and hubs should be serviced by a Simba dealer.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the wheel nuts at 270 N·m.
  2. Check the tyre pressure, up to 3.5 bar (50 psi) maximum, and the tyre condition.
  3. Test the brakes before first use and after the first laden journey. Check the road and parking brakes release and look for leaks of air or hydraulic fluid.
  4. Leave brake and hub work to an authorised dealer.

Tools: Torque wrench, Tyre gauge

End-of-season storage

Storage · every year

Simba lists a preparation-for-storage section and says grease the DD light roll yearly or at the end of the season. Grease after any pressure washing.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1Lithium complex EP2 grease. Aztec Oils match: VOLCATEC LITHIUM COMPLEX B-EP 2P12710
Step-by-step
  1. Wash the machine, keeping jets off bearings, and grease every point immediately afterwards.
  2. Grease the DD light roll.
  3. Check the discs and shear bolts for wear and order wearing parts before next season.
  4. The storage page itself was not readable: check your handbook for any further steps.

Known problems

Scrambled tables

The maintenance table in the copy I read was jumbled. The 10, 50 and 200 hour items are the likely readings; confirm against your handbook.

Bouncing in work

Reduce speed to below 12 km/h, wing pressure or disc angle, depending on cause.

Roll blocking

Adjust the DD ring scrapers to clear dirt from between the rings.
