Flail check, replacement and bolt torque

Rotor · every 8 hours

Spearhead: check the condition of the flails and the retaining bolts daily; torque is 160 lb ft (200 N·m). Replace badly worn, damaged or cracked flails at once and never weld them. Replace nuts and bolts with new whenever flails are replaced. Never run with a flail missing: it causes vibration, bearing wear and cracks the hood. Do not change to a different type of flail, to protect rotor balance.

Drive belt tension and pulleys

Known problems

Bolts work loose when new

Spearhead says a new machine has a bedding-in period, so check gearbox and flail bolts often at first.

Never weld flails

Welding makes them brittle and dangerous.
