Spearhead says grease both universal joints every 8 hours, and dismantle, clean and re-grease the input shaft sliding surfaces, or the gearbox can be badly damaged. The chart lists a U.J. check and change at 50 hours.

Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor and take the key out.
Grease both universal joints.
Regularly pull the shaft apart, clean the sliding surfaces and re-grease them.
At 50 hours check the universal joints for play and change any that are worn.

Gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every 500 hours or every year

Spearhead says drain and replace the gearbox oil after the first 50 hours and then every year. The service chart lists it at 500 hours. Check the level before first use and every 8 hours.

Step-by-step

Stop the tractor, take the key out and make sure the PTO is disengaged.
Drain the gearbox, refit the plug and refill with EP90 to the level plug. Do not overtighten the plugs, as this damages the housing.
On a new machine do this at 50 hours, then every year or 500 hours.
Check the gearbox and pump bolts are tight and the seals are dry.

Return line and service filter change (and oil if contaminated)

Hydraulics · every 500 hours

Spearhead says replace the return line and service filter elements after the first 50 hours and then every 500 hours, because a blocked element lets oil bypass unfiltered. Spearhead gives no fixed oil change: replace the oil if it is discoloured or contaminated.

Step-by-step

Put the head firmly on the ground, disengage the PTO, apply the handbrake, stop the engine and take the key out.
Clean thoroughly round the filter housings and the tank cap before opening them.
Change the return line element and the pressure filter element. On a new machine do this at 50 hours, then every 500 hours.
If the oil is discoloured, drain the tank and refill with HD46 to the centre of the sight gauge.
If the pump has been cavitating or the controls feel spongy, drain the tank, clean the tank and the suction filter, dry them, and refill with clean oil.
Run at half revs to bleed the system, then recheck the level and look for leaks.

Spearhead's storage notes: wash, grease every point until fresh grease shows, smear grease on the chrome ram rods, store under cover on firm level ground, and keep the controls dry.

Step-by-step

Wash the machine. Keep a pressure washer jet away from the paint, and rinse off all detergent.
Grease every point until fresh grease shows. Grease again after each wash.
Smear grease on areas that rust, especially the chrome ram rods.
Wrap the control levers in plastic and tape them. Take PROPILOT or MINIPILOT controls indoors.
Store under cover on firm level ground with the head on the ground.

Flails, flail bolts and rotor bearings

Spearhead's chart: check the flails, flail bolts and head retaining bolts during the first 1–4 hours, and the rotor bearing bolts and bearing greasing every 8 hours. Flail bolts are 280 Nm. Never run with flails missing.

Step-by-step

Put the head firmly on the ground, disengage the PTO, stop the engine, take the key out and wait for the rotor to stop.
Check every flail for wear and damage. Replace broken or missing flails and keep the rotor balanced.
Torque the flail bolts to 280 Nm (M16) and check the head retaining and head bracket bolts.
Check the rotor bearing bolts are tight and grease the bearings.
On a new machine, check all bolts hourly for the first day and then daily.

Break-back and auto reset check

Arms · when needed

On the Twiga the slew ram is also the break-back ram. With Auto Reset on, the head rises as the arm swings back past an obstacle and drops back after. Spearhead warns the break back does not work when reversing, and too much roller weight or speed makes it trip early.

Step-by-step

With the head in a safe position, check the arm breaks back and resets with Auto Reset on (yellow switch on).
If it breaks back too often when verge mowing, take more weight off the rear roller using arm float or lift, and slow down.
In confined areas or on steep hills, Spearhead suggests switching Auto Reset off and resetting by the slew control.
Never work in reverse: the break back will not work and the damage is not covered by warranty.

Known problems

Cold starts

Spearhead says run at low speed for at least 15 minutes to warm the oil before full work, and never run out of oil: a starved pump or motor is ruined.

Watch the tank gauge

A burst hose can empty the tank in minutes. The gauge can be seen from the seat.

Repair guides

Burst or chafed hydraulic hose: replacing a hose (Moderate, 30 minutes to 2 hours per hose): Oil spraying from the arm, the tank gauge dropping fast, a service stops working, or a hose with its outer cover or black protective sleeve worn through.
Break-back trips too often or will not reset (Easy, 30 minutes): The arm swings back on its own in normal work, especially when verge mowing or working uphill, or it stays broken back and will not return.
Hydraulic oil tank overheating (Easy, 30 minutes to 2 hours): Tank and pipes too hot to touch, movements getting slower as the day goes on, oil smelling hot, or the oil turning dark.
Arm hydraulics not responding, sluggish or jerky (Moderate, 1 hour to check; half a day if the tank and suction filter must be cleaned): Arm services do nothing, the joystick feels sluggish, arms move irregularly, an electric valve does not respond, the pump is noisy, or the controls feel spongy.
Flail head vibration: flails, rotor bearings and balance (Moderate, 1–2 hours for flails; 3–4 hours for a bearing): Head shakes, poor cut quality, a broken or missing flail, a rotor bearing running hot or rough, or wire or string wound round the rotor.
