Spark plug replacement
Ignition · every 100 hours
Stihl says fit a new spark plug after about 100 hours of use, or sooner if the electrodes are badly worn. Use only a resistor (suppressed) plug of the type Stihl approves.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spark plug NGK BPMR7A | 1 | Genuine Stihl number; Bosch WSR 6 F (1110 400 7005) is the approved alternative. Gap 0.5 mm | 0000 400 7000 |
Step-by-step
- Remove the shroud. Pull off the plug boot and clean around the plug.
- Push the combination spanner through the grommet onto the plug and unscrew it.
- Set the new plug's gap to 0.5 mm.
- Screw it in by hand through the grommet, then tighten. Fit the boot and press it down firmly.
- The plug must have its adapter nut fitted and tight; a loose nut can arc and start a fire.
- A sooty plug points to too much oil in the mix, a dirty air filter or poor running conditions. Put the cause right.
Tools: Stihl combination spanner, Feeler gauge 0.5 mm
Guide bar: flip, clean, deburr and check groove depth
Cutting attachment · every month
Stihl's chart says deburr the bar weekly, and the bar care page says flip it after every sharpening and every chain change so it wears evenly. The app counts in months, so this is set to monthly; Stihl's figure is weekly.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Guide bar | 1 | Replace only if worn or damaged; quote the bar part number stamped on the bar | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stihl says do this weekly. Engine off, chain brake on, gloves on.
- Remove the sprocket cover, chain and bar.
- Clean the oil inlet hole, the oil outlet channel and the bar groove.
- File off any burrs on the bar rails.
- Measure the groove depth with the gauge on the file gauge where the bar is most worn. For .325 in Rapid chain the minimum is 6.0 mm. Replace the bar if it is shallower.
- Refit the bar the other way up (flip it), refit and tension the chain.
Tools: Flat file, Stihl file gauge (has a groove depth scale), Work gloves, Rag
Chain sprocket check and replacement
Drive · every month
Stihl's chart says check the chain sprocket weekly. Fit a new sprocket after two chains have been used, or sooner if the wear marks are deeper than 0.5 mm. Running two chains in turn helps preserve the sprocket. The app counts in months, so the check is set to monthly.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rim sprocket, .325 in, 7-tooth | 1 | From the Stihl parts list | 0000 642 1236 |
| Rim sprocket kit, .325 in, 7-tooth | 1 | Kit alternative from the parts list | 1141 007 1002 |
| Needle cage 10x13x10 | 1 | Replace if worn | 9512 933 2260 |
| Stihl grease for the crankshaft stub and needle cage | 1 | Special accessory; check your handbook for the number | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Stihl says check weekly. Engine off, gloves on.
- Remove the sprocket cover, chain and bar. Pull the hand guard back to release the chain brake.
- Check the wear marks on the sprocket. Replace it if they are deeper than 0.5 mm, or after two chains have been worn out.
- To replace: prise off the E-clip, take off the washer and rim sprocket. Check the splines on the clutch drum; if badly worn, the drum should be replaced too.
- Pull off the clutch drum and needle cage, clean the crankshaft stub and needle cage and grease them with Stihl grease.
- Refit the needle cage and drum, and turn the drum about one full turn so the oil pump drive engages.
- Fit the rim sprocket with its cavities facing outwards, then the washer and E-clip.
- Use a genuine Stihl sprocket so the chain brake works properly.
Tools: Combination spanner, Small screwdriver (E-clip), Stihl sprocket wear gauge (special accessory), Work gloves
Chain oiler, chain oil tank and fuel tank clean
Lubrication · every month
Stihl says clean the fuel tank and the chain oil tank monthly, and check the chain lubrication before every start. Refill the chain oil at every refuel; some oil must still be in the tank when the fuel runs out.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain and bar oil | 1 | Stihl BioPlus or another quality chain oil, 0.27 L tank. Aztec Oils match: AGRITEC CHAINSAW 100XT | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Monthly: drain and clean the fuel tank and the chain oil tank so dirt does not reach the pumps.
- Before work: hold the running saw over a light surface; the chain must throw off a film of oil.
- If the oil tank is still part full when the fuel runs out, check the bar oil holes and the oil supply, and see a dealer if needed.
- The oil flow screw (underneath, where fitted) has an Ematic position E for medium flow. Turn clockwise for more oil and anticlockwise for less. The chain must always be wet with oil.
- Never use waste oil: it lacks lubricating properties and can cause skin cancer.
Tools: Approved fuel can, Clean rag, Screwdriver for the oil flow screw
Fan air intake and cylinder fins clean
Engine · every month
Stihl says clean the air intake on the fan housing weekly and the cylinder fins monthly, and both at the end of work or daily as needed. Poor cleaning of the cooling air path is listed by Stihl as a cause of engine damage. The app counts in months; do the fan intake weekly.
Step-by-step
- Engine off and cool.
- Brush the air intake slots on the fan housing clean (Stihl: weekly).
- Remove the shroud and brush the cylinder fins clean (Stihl: monthly).
- Refit the shroud.
Tools: Soft brush, Combination spanner
Chain brake test and dealer service
Safety · every 6 months
Stihl says test the chain brake before starting work and every time you refill the tank. The brake band wears, so Stihl also says have it serviced by a trained dealer every 3 months for full-time use, every 6 months for part-time use and every 12 months for occasional use. The 6-month figure here is Stihl's part-time interval.
Step-by-step
- Wear full chainsaw PPE for this test: helmet, eye protection to EN 166 or a face shield, ear defenders, gloves, trousers with cut-retardant pads and safety boots with cut-retardant material and steel toe caps.
- Before work and at every refill: start the saw on firm ground with the chain clear of the ground, and let it idle.
- Push the front hand guard towards the bar nose to engage the brake. Open the throttle wide for no more than 3 seconds. The chain must not move.
- Release the throttle, then pull the hand guard back towards the front handle until it clicks to release the brake.
- Keep the hand guard free of dirt so it moves freely. Never modify the hand guard; the brake only works if it is unaltered.
- Do not run the engine at high revs with the brake on: it quickly damages the clutch and brake.
- If the chain moves during the test, stop using the saw and take it to a Stihl dealer.
- Book the dealer brake service: every 3 months (full-time use), 6 months (part-time) or 12 months (occasional).
Tools: Chainsaw PPE (helmet, visor or goggles, ear defenders, saw gloves, chainsaw trousers, chainsaw boots)
Fuel pickup body (fuel filter) replacement
Fuel · every year
Stihl's chart says check the pickup body (the filter in the fuel tank) monthly, clean or replace the filter insert if faulty, and replace the pickup body annually or if damaged.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pickup body (fuel filter) | 1 | From the Stihl parts list (tank housing) | 0000 350 3518 |
Step-by-step
- Work outdoors, away from flames. Avoid skin contact with petrol and its fumes.
- Empty the fuel tank into an approved can.
- Pull the pickup body out of the filler neck with a hook. Do not stretch or tear the fuel hose.
- Fit the new pickup body to the hose and push it back into the tank.
- Refuel with fresh 50:1 mix and check for leaks before starting.
Tools: Wire hook to pull the pickup out of the tank, Approved fuel can, Gloves
Chain sharpening and depth gauges
Cutting attachment · when needed
Stihl says check the chain for sharpness before work and at every refill, and sharpen as required. A blunt chain raises strain and vibration. Depth gauges that are too low make kickback more likely.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round file, 4.8 mm (3/16 in), for .325 in chain | 1 | From the manual's sharpening tools table | 5605 772 4806 |
| File holder with round file, .325 in | 1 | 5605 750 4328 | |
| File gauge | 1 | 1110 893 4000 | |
| Flat (taper square) file for depth gauges | 1 | 0814 252 3356 | |
| Sharpening set, .325 in (holder, round file, flat file, gauge) | 1 | Optional instead of the separate items | 5605 007 1028 |
Step-by-step
- Wear work gloves: the cutters are sharp even when the saw is off.
- Clamp the bar. Push the hand guard forward to lock the chain; pull it back to release the brake when you need to move the chain on.
- Clean the chain and check it for cracks and damaged rivets. Replace damaged parts.
- File with a 4.8 mm round file in a file holder. Hold the file level, at right angles to the bar, at the 30° angle marked on the holder (Rapid Micro and Rapid Super chains; ripping chains marked X use 10°).
- File from the inside of the cutter outwards, only on the forward stroke. Two or three strokes are usually enough. Do not file the tie straps or drive links.
- Keep all cutters the same length: file them all down to the shortest one. Uneven cutters cause rough running and chain breakage.
- Check the depth gauges with the file gauge after every sharpening. For .325 in chain the gap between depth gauge and cutting edge is 0.65 mm. If the gauge stands above the file gauge, file it flush with the flat file, then round off its front edge parallel to the service mark.
- Never file the rest of a humped drive link and never take depth gauges lower than specified: it increases kickback.
- Clean off filings and oil the chain well afterwards. Store spare chains clean and oiled.
Tools: Bench vice or stump vice for the bar, Work gloves, Piece of hardwood to remove file burrs
Air filter clean or replace
Engine · when needed
Stihl gives no fixed interval: clean the filter when engine power drops noticeably (the chart's 'if faulty' and 'as required'), and replace it if damaged. Shorten all intervals in dusty work.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air filter HD2 | 1 | From the Stihl parts list | 1141 140 4400 |
Step-by-step
- Remove the shroud: move the Master Control to STOP, push the hand guard forward, and turn the twist locks a quarter turn anticlockwise.
- Brush loose dirt away from around the filter.
- Turn the filter a quarter turn anticlockwise and lift it out towards the rear handle. Do not use tools on it.
- Knock out the dirt, spray the outside with Stihl special cleaner or soapy water and rinse the outside under warm running water.
- Let it dry naturally: no heat, and never oil the filter. Replace a damaged filter.
- Refit: push it into the housing and turn clockwise until it locks, with the STIHL name horizontal. Refit the shroud.
Tools: Combination spanner (shroud twist locks), Stihl special cleaner or soapy water, Soft brush
Anti-vibration elements check
Safety · when needed
Stihl says check the anti-vibration elements before starting work and if faulty, and have them replaced by a servicing dealer if damaged. Worn mounts raise vibration and can lead to white finger.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| AV mount | 1 | Dealer job. Three AV mounts are listed (1141 792 2900, 1141 792 2902, 1141 792 2910); check which position | check your handbook |
| AV spring | 1 | Dealer job | 1141 790 8304 |
Step-by-step
- Look at the rubber/spring mounts between engine and handles for cracks, splits or looseness.
- If the handles feel spongy or vibration has increased, have the elements replaced by a Stihl dealer.
Chain catcher check
Safety · when needed
Stihl says check the chain catcher before starting work and replace it if damaged. It catches a broken or thrown chain.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chain catcher | 1 | From the Stihl parts list | 1141 656 7700 |
Step-by-step
- Before work, check the catcher under the bar is present, undamaged and secure.
- If it is damaged or missing, fit a new one before using the saw.
Tools: Screwdriver (Torx/spline)
Idle check and M-Tronic calibration (no owner carburettor adjustment)
Fuel · when needed
The MS 261 C-M has M-Tronic, which sets the fuel mixture itself; there are no owner adjustment screws in the manual. Stihl says check before work and at each refill that the chain does not turn at idle; if it does, have the saw checked and repaired by a dealer.
Step-by-step
- Before work: let the engine idle with the chain brake released and the chain clear of everything. The chain must not move.
- If the chain moves at idle, stop and take the saw to a Stihl dealer. There is no owner idle screw on this model.
- If running is poor after a change of fuel or conditions: on M-Tronic version 3.0 or later (shown on the approval label), calibrate as the manual says: Master Control to the start position, chain brake on, start without touching the throttle and let it run 30 to 60 seconds, release the brake, then hold full throttle for at least 30 seconds until the speed drops.
- On M-Tronic below version 3.0, make five even full-throttle cuts to speed up the automatic adaptation.
- The chain turns during calibration: hold the saw properly and keep clear of the chain. If the engine keeps stopping, put the brake on and see a dealer.
Tools: Chainsaw PPE
Storage for 3 months or more
Fuel · when needed
Stihl gives a specific lay-up routine for periods of 3 months or longer. Fuel mix should not be kept longer than 30 days (Stihl MotoMix up to 2 years).
Step-by-step
- In a well-ventilated place, drain and clean the fuel tank. Dispose of the fuel properly.
- Run the engine until the carburettor is dry, so the diaphragms do not stick.
- Take off the chain and bar, clean them and spray with corrosion-inhibiting oil.
- Clean the saw thoroughly, especially the cylinder fins and air filter.
- If you use a bio chain oil such as BioPlus, fill the chain oil tank completely.
- Store dry, high up or locked away from children.
Tools: Approved fuel can, Corrosion-inhibiting oil, Brush

Known problems
Running at high revs with the brake on
Stihl warns this quickly damages the engine, clutch and chain brake. Always release the brake before opening the throttle (except during the brake test).
Chain left tight after work
A chain tensioned while hot shrinks as it cools and can damage the crankshaft and bearings. Slacken it after work.
Ethanol fuel
M-Tronic saws give full power on fuel with up to 25% ethanol (E25); saws with a manual carburettor should not use more than 10%.
Repair guides
- Clutch drum or chain brake damaged by revving with the brake on (Specialist, 30 minutes to inspect; dealer for the brake): Blue or glazed clutch drum, burning smell or smoke from the sprocket cover, chain creeping or brake not holding, brake band scored or thin after the saw was run fast with the chain brake engaged.
- Chain left tight after work: slacken it off to save the crankshaft (Easy, 5 minutes): Chain was tensioned while hot and left on overnight; chain tight as a bowstring next morning, stiff to pull round, rumbling or play at the clutch side of the crankshaft.
- Old fuel mix or too much ethanol: drain, refill and recover (Easy, 30 minutes): Hard starting, poor idle, lack of power or surging after the saw has stood, fuel mix that smells stale or looks dark, or E10+ pump fuel in an older manual-carburettor saw.
- Running in a new saw (or one with a new piston and cylinder) (Easy, First 10 hours of use): New or freshly rebuilt saw; worry about scoring the piston, or a saw that seems short of power for its first few tanks.
- MS 261 won't start: plug, fuel, flooding and M-Tronic calibration (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Pulls over but will not fire, fires then dies, starts only with the lever on cold start, wet plug, or runs badly after a change of fuel.
- Starter rope or rewind spring replacement (Moderate, 30–45 minutes): Rope frayed or snapped, rope will not rewind, grip hangs loose, or the starter spins without turning the engine.
- Chain sprocket, clutch drum and clutch springs replacement; chain brake check (Moderate, 30 minutes (sprocket); 1–2 hours (clutch)): Sprocket teeth or rim worn into grooves, new chain jumps or wears fast, chain turns at idle, clutch slips under load, drum rattles, or brake slow to stop the chain.
- Chain oiler not oiling (and the waste oil problem) (Moderate, 30–60 minutes): Chain dry and blue, smoke from the bar, no oil line thrown off when revved, oil tank still full when the fuel runs out, or a pump that stopped after waste oil was used.
- Guide bar rail dressing, groove cleaning and wear check (Easy, 20–30 minutes): Saw cuts crooked, burrs or a lip on the bar rails, chain leaning over, rails worn unevenly, chain drive links touching the bottom of the groove, or a hollow under the bar tip.
- Anti-vibration mounts and springs: check and replace (Specialist, 1–2 hours (dealer)): More vibration in the handles, tingling or numb fingers, handle loose or floppy against the engine, cracked rubber buffers, or the saw bottoming out.
- Fuel pickup (filter) and fuel hose replacement (Moderate, 20 minutes (pickup); 1 hour (hose)): Saw starves at full throttle or when tilted, dies after a minute, needs lots of pulls to prime, fuel weeping from the tank, or a hose that is hard, cracked or swollen.
