Service jobs and parts

Wheel studs and tyre pressure

Running gear · every 10 hours

Sumo says check the wheel studs after the first 10 hours then weekly, tightening to 270 N·m, and keep tyres at 20 psi.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the wheel nuts at 270 N·m, first after 10 hours and then weekly.
  2. Set the tyres to 20 psi and check them regularly.

Tools: Torque wrench, Tyre gauge

Legs, points, discs and scrapers: wear check

Wear parts · every 10 hours

Sumo says keep an eye on the condition of the legs, points and discs. Do not tighten points with air ratchets or overtighten with spanners: they can crack.

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the machine and make it safe.
  2. Look over the legs, points and discs for wear and damage and replace worn points before the leg itself wears.
  3. Do not use an air ratchet or overtighten the point bolts.
  4. Check the packer scrapers for soil build-up. They must not touch the packer: contact adds rolling resistance and wears the packer.

Grease rams, hinge bushes and chrome rods

Lubrication · every 50 hours

Sumo says one pump on each ram every 50 hours, and the exposed chrome ram rods weekly with grease to stop rust and oil leaks.

Grease1Grade not stated: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Give each ram nipple one pump.
  2. Wipe grease over exposed chrome ram rods weekly.
  3. At winter storage give rams, wing hinge bushes and drawbar hinge bushes two or three pumps each.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Weekly greasing: packer and disc bearings

Lubrication · every month

Sumo says grease the packer bearings with one pump weekly, and the disc bearings until old grease is pushed out, weekly in normal use and after every wash. The app counts in months or hours, so this shows monthly: do it weekly while working.

  2. Grease the packer bearings with one pump each.
  3. Grease the disc bearings until the old grease is forced out.
  4. Repeat after every wash.

Auto-reset leg pressure and working depth

Hydraulics · every year

Auto-reset legs are set at the valve block on the chassis; the maximum is 120 bar and more pressure makes the legs harder to trip.

Step-by-step
  1. Fold the wings down. Adjust one setting at a time at the auto-reset valve block (winding in increases resistance), then cycle the legs up and down to set the pressure.
  2. Never exceed 120 bar.
  3. Set leg depth up to a maximum of 400 mm by moving the leg pin (and the R-clip and shear pin on shear-pin models).
  4. The disc unit works the top 50–100 mm: change depth by moving the depth pins after taking the weight off the packer arms.

Tools: Pressure gauge

Winter storage

Storage · every year

Sumo's winter storage list: wash off all soil, grease the packer and disc bearings, give rams and hinge bushes two or three pumps, check the wheel studs and tyres, and order wearing parts early.

Step-by-step
  1. Clean and wash off all soil after work.
  2. Grease the packer bearings with one pump and the disc bearings until old grease is expelled.
  3. Give the rams, wing hinge bushes and drawbar hinge bushes two or three pumps each.
  4. Check the wheel studs for tightness and tyres for slow leaks.
  5. Note which wearing parts need replacing and order early.

Known problems

Cracked points

Overtightening points, especially with an air ratchet, cracks them.

Grease and oil grade

Sumo's manual names no grease grade. Use a good multipurpose EP grease only if your handbook agrees.

Over-pressured legs

More than 120 bar can damage the machine.
