Air cleaner element inspect and clean
Engine · every 1,000 km or every 3 months
Suzuki's chart marks the air cleaner element for inspection in both the 1,000 km (600 mi) / 3 month and the 2,000 km / 6 month columns, so it is set at every 1,000 km or 3 months. Inspect much more often in dusty, wet or muddy work.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air cleaner element (non-woven fabric) | 1 | Fiche lists this as 'FILTER ASSY (MC)' for LT-A450X 2010 (per Suncity Motorcycles fiche); other years may differ | 13780-31G30 |
Step-by-step
- Remove the seat, then the fasteners and cover. Remove the bolt and the element assembly.
- Blow dust out with an air line from the throttle body side only. Blowing from the cover side forces dirt into the element.
- Replace the element if it is torn or clogged with dust or oil.
- Refit it in reverse order and make sure it is fully seated and sealing. Never run the engine without it.
- If water has got into the air cleaner case, clean the element and the inside of the case immediately.
- Check the air cleaner drain tube. If petrol or oil has collected, remove the caps and drain into a container. Both are flammable.
Tools: Compressed air line, Screwdriver, Gloves, Eye protection
Throttle cable, throttle body and idle speed check
Fuel · every 1,000 km or every 3 months
Suzuki's chart says inspect the throttle cable play and idle speed at 200 km and every 1,000 km (600 mi) or 3 months, and the throttle body every 1,000 km or 3 months. This model is fuel-injected, so there is no carburettor. Replace the fuel hose every 4 years.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel hose | 1 | Replace every 4 years; check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- With the engine off, check the throttle lever play and that it springs back. Adjust at the cable adjuster as the owner's manual shows.
- Look along the fuel hose for cracks or damage. Petrol is highly flammable: no smoking or flames.
- Idle speed needs a tachometer. If you do not have one, have your dealer set it.
- Run the engine only outdoors.
Tools: Spanners, Tachometer (or have a dealer set idle)
Brakes, pads, rear brake plates and fluid
Brakes · every 1,000 km or every 3 months
Suzuki's chart says inspect the brakes at 200 km and every 1,000 km (600 mi) or 3 months, inspect the brake fluid every 1,000 km or 3 months and replace it every 2 years, replace brake hoses every 4 years, and replace the rear brake plates every 10,000 km (6,000 mi). Suzuki marks brakes as a dealer job.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|

| Front brake pads | 1 | Genuine Suzuki pad and shim set, right front, for LT-A450X 2010 (per Suncity fiche); left front 59100-31860; other years may differ | 59100-31850 |
| Rear brake plates | 1 | Replace every 10,000 km or at the wear limit; check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, engine off, key out.
- Check the front brake fluid level and look for leaks. Use only DOT 4; never mix types. Brake fluid is harmful and damages paint and plastics.
- Check the front pads for wear. Replace both pads together, and pump the lever several times afterwards before riding.
- Rear brake pedal: set 20–30 mm free travel with the adjuster.
- Rear brake lever (parking brake): set 6–8 mm play at the lever holder. With the rear wheels off the ground they must spin freely with the brake off and lock with the parking brake on.
- Rear wear: fully apply the brake and check the index mark is within the limit. If it is outside, have the brake plates replaced by your dealer.
- Every 2 years have the brake fluid replaced, and every 4 years the brake hoses.
Tools: Torch, Rule, Spanners

- A slipping or juddering drive can mean a worn or wet belt.
Tools: Service manual
General lubrication (named grease points)
Chassis · every 1,000 km or every 3 months
Suzuki's chart says lubricate at every 1,000 km (600 mi) or 3 months. The owner's manual names the grease points and says your dealer should do it.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grease | 1 | check your handbook | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Grease the brake lever holder, the throttle lever and front brake lever holder, the steering shaft holder, the brake pedal and rod link, the drive shaft joint spline and the propeller shaft joint spline.
- Do not grease or oil the switches: it damages them.
- Lubricate more often after severe use.
Tools: Grease gun, Rag
Engine oil and filter change
Engine · every 2,000 km or every 6 months
Suzuki's chart says replace the oil and filter at 200 km (100 mi) or 1 month, then every 2,000 km (1,200 mi) or 6 months, whichever comes first. The chart gives no hours figure. Change it warm so it drains easily.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine oil | 1 | SAE 10W-40 JASO MA, 2.7 L with filter. Aztec Oils match: MOTOTEC ENDURANCE 10W-40 | check your handbook |
| Oil filter (spin-on) | 1 | Genuine Suzuki engine oil filter for LT-A450X 2010 (per Suncity Motorcycles fiche); other years may differ | 16510-07J10 |
| Oil filter wrench (cap type) | 1 | Suzuki tool, available from Suzuki dealers | 09915-40610 |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, engine warm, engine off, key out. Hot oil burns: wear gloves. Keep children and animals away from old oil.
- Remove the fasteners and cover, then the oil filler cap. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the engine and drain into a tray.
- Remove the screw, fasteners and inner cover. Turn the filter anticlockwise with a cap-type or strap-type filter wrench.
- Wipe the filter mounting face clean. Smear a little engine oil on the new filter's rubber gasket.
- Screw the new filter on by hand until the gasket just touches (a small resistance is felt). Mark the top of the wrench or filter, then tighten 2 turns, or to 20 N·m.
- Refit the drain plug securely. Pour in about 2.7 L of the specified oil.
- Start the engine outdoors on level ground and idle for a few minutes. Stop it, wait 3 minutes and check the level is at the F mark on the dipstick (cap resting on the hole, not screwed in). Top up if needed.
- Check around the drain plug and filter for leaks, refit the covers and dispose of the old oil properly.
Tools: Drain tray (5 L), Socket set, Oil filter wrench, Torque wrench (20 N·m), Funnel, Gloves
Spark plug inspect (replace every 6,000 km)
Engine · every 2,000 km or every 6 months
Suzuki's chart says inspect the plug every 2,000 km (1,200 mi) or 6 months and replace it every 6,000 km (4,000 mi).
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spark plug | 1 | Suzuki handbook names NGK CR6E or Denso U20ESR-N. Genuine Suzuki number not found | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Let the engine cool and take the key out.
- Remove the plug cap and plug, and cover the hole so no dirt falls into the engine.
- A light brown insulator is right. White or dark means the engine may need adjusting or a different plug: ask your dealer.
- Set the gap to 0.7–0.8 mm.
- Screw the plug in by hand as far as it will go. Then tighten a new plug about 1/2 turn, a used plug about 1/8 turn. Over-tightening or cross-threading damages the aluminium head.
Tools: Plug spanner, Thickness (feeler) gauge
Valve clearance check
Engine · every 2,000 km or every 6 months
Suzuki's chart says inspect the valve clearance at 200 km or 1 month, then every 2,000 km (1,200 mi) or 6 months. Suzuki marks it as a dealer job. The clearance figure is not in the owner's manual.
Step-by-step
- Only check with the engine cold.
- The clearance figure and procedure are in the Suzuki service manual, not the owner's manual. If you do not have them, have your dealer do it.
Tools: Feeler gauges, Service manual
Spark arrester clean
Exhaust · every 2,000 km or every 6 months
Suzuki's chart says clean the spark arrester every 2,000 km (1,200 mi) or 6 months.
Step-by-step
- Wait until the silencer is cold: a hot muffler burns.
- Remove the nuts and cover, then the spark arrester.
- Brush the carbon off the screen without damaging it. Replace the screen if it has holes or tears.
- Refit in reverse order.
Tools: Spanners, Brush, Gloves
Front differential and final gear oil change
Transmission · every year
Suzuki's chart says inspect both gear oils every 2,000 km (1,200 mi) or 6 months, replace the final gear oil every year and the front differential oil every 2 years. Both are set yearly here so they are done together; the front can wait to 2 years if it is clean.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front differential gear oil | 1 | SAE 90 GL-5 hypoid (SAE 80 below 0 °C), 500 ml. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-5 90 | check your handbook |
| Final gear oil | 1 | SAE 90 GL-5 hypoid (SAE 80 below 0 °C), 770 ml. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-5 90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, engine off, key out, parking brake on.
- Remove the covers under the gear cases. Remove the filler cap of the case you are changing, then its drain plug, and drain into a tray.
- Front differential: refit the drain plug tightly. Remove the level bolt and pour fresh oil through the filler until it flows out of the level hole (about 500 ml). Refit the level bolt.
- Final gear: refit the drain plug tightly and fill until the oil reaches the bottom of the filler hole (about 770 ml).
- Tighten the filler caps, refit the covers and dispose of the old oil properly. Keep children and pets away from it.
Tools: Drain tray, Socket set, Oil syringe or squeeze bottle

Known problems
Oil or petrol in the air cleaner drain tube
Suzuki says check the air cleaner drain tube periodically and drain any petrol or oil that collects. Both are flammable.
Water in the air cleaner case
If water gets into the case, clean the element and the inside of the case immediately, or water can reach the engine.
Rear brake plates wear
The sealed oil-bathed rear brake has a wear indicator. Suzuki says replace the plates every 10,000 km, or sooner if the index mark is outside the limit.
Wrong oil hurts the clutch
Suzuki does not recommend energy conserving oils: they can affect engine life and clutch performance. Use JASO MA.
Fuel hose ageing
Suzuki says replace the fuel hose every 4 years even if it looks fine, as ageing damage is not always visible.
Repair guides
- Water, petrol or oil in the air box: drain and dry before starting (Easy, 30–60 minutes): Liquid or dirt visible in the air box drain tube or check hose after wading or deep mud, engine misfiring or stalling after water, or a soaked foam element.
- Clutch slip from the wrong engine oil (CVT quads) (Easy, 1 hour): Engine revs flare without drive, jerky take-off or creeping, especially after an oil change or an oil additive.
- Brake fluid change and brake hose replacement (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Dark fluid in the reservoir, spongy lever or pedal, hoses cracked or swollen, or no record of a fluid change in the last 2 years.
- Spark plug choice, fouling and misfire (KingQuad) (Easy, 30 minutes): Hard starting, misfire at low speed on light farm work, sooty plug, or a plug that looks white and overheated.
- Milky gear oil and drive shaft seal leaks (KingQuad) (Moderate, 1 hour for oil; 3–5 hours for a seal): Milky front differential or final gear oil after wet work, oil on the inside of a wheel, or a weeping seal at a drive shaft.
- Sealed oil-bathed rear brake: wear check and plate replacement (Hard, 3–5 hours): Rear brake or parking brake weak, wear indicator outside its range, oil leaking at the brake case, or plates due at 10,000 km (LT-A450X).
- Fuel hose replacement (LT-A450X) (Moderate, 1 hour): Fuel hose 4 years old or more, smell of petrol, damp or cracked hose, or a hose that feels hard.
- CV boots and drive shafts (Yamaha and Suzuki) (Hard, 2–3 hours per shaft): Torn boot with grease flung round the wheel arch, clicking on full lock, knock when taking up drive.
- Wheel bearing check and replacement (Moderate, 1.5–3 hours per wheel): Wheel rocks top to bottom when gripped, rumble or growl that changes on turns, uneven tyre wear or a hub running hot.
- Ball joints, tie-rod ends and toe setting (Moderate, 1–2 hours per side): Steering wander or knock over bumps, play when you rock a front wheel side to side, split rubber boots on the joints, or front tyres scrubbing.
- Disc brake pads, discs and caliper slide pins (Moderate, 1–2 hours per axle): Grinding or squeal, pads down to the wear grooves, lever travel growing, brake pulling to one side, or a caliper sticking and the wheel running hot.
- Will not crank or cranks slowly: battery, connections and starter motor (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Click and nothing, slow cranking, starter spins without turning the engine, or starting only works on the recoil.
- Recoil starter rope and spring repair (Moderate, 1–1.5 hours): Rope snapped or frayed, rope will not rewind, or the pulley spins without turning the engine.
- CVT drive belt inspection and replacement (Hard, 2–3 hours): Jerky take-off, slipping under load, burning smell, squeal, loss of top speed, or a belt that is cracked, glazed or narrowed.
- Overheating: cooling fan, radiator and cap (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Temperature warning light, coolant boiling into the reserve tank, fan not running when hot, or (TRX350) oil running hot with the oil cooler fan silent.
- Winch will not pull, runs one way only, or runs weak (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Nothing happens at the switch, the winch only runs in or only out, motor hums but the drum does not turn, slow line speed, or the winch got soaked.
The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your quad.
