Service jobs and parts

Twice-weekly lubrication

Chassis · every 8 hours

The schedule assumes 15 hours' use a week, so twice a week is roughly every 8 hours: grease the rear bed chain roller bush, the 2 nipples at the ends of the SC chute ram and the shear sprocket, and oil the crossbeater drive chain.

Step-by-step
  1. Grease the 4 nipples and oil the crossbeater drive chain. The optional automatic chain oiler does this for the crossbeater chain.

Tools: Grease gun, Oil can

Weekly lubrication

Chassis · every 15 hours

Weekly (about 15 hours): oil the bed chain drive chain, grease the PTO universal joint and sliding members, and the 4 nipples on the SC swivel mechanism.

Fortnightly lubrication

Chassis · every 30 hours

Fortnightly (about 30 hours): the crossbeater bearings behind the drive sprocket on the left, the bed chain front roller bearing and the layshaft bearing.

Step-by-step
  1. Grease the crossbeater bearings, bed chain front roller bearing and layshaft bearing.

Gearbox oil level and first change

Drive · every month

The handbook says replace the main gearbox oil after the first 50 hours, then check the level monthly (rotor gearbox, and the bed chain gearbox where fitted). It gives no further change interval, so check your handbook.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Gearbox oil1SAE 90 EP gear oil. Rotor gearbox 5 L, bed chain gearbox 2.5 L. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Check both gearbox levels each month and top up to the level plug.
  2. On a new machine, drain and refill after 50 hours of use.
  3. Take old oil to an approved recycling point.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanner set, Funnel

Monthly and yearly lubrication

Chassis · every month

Monthly: PTO guards and the layshaft universal joint. Yearly: wheel bearings. Ring hitch as required.

Step-by-step
  1. Grease the PTO guard rings and the layshaft universal joint. Pack the wheel bearings once a year.

Tools: Grease gun

Bed chain tension

Floor · every month

Midway between front and rear sprockets the chain should lift 50 mm above the bed. Adjust both sides.

Step-by-step
  1. Slacken the front lock nut on the tensioner each side and jack the mounting bush with the other nut.
  2. Tighten until the chain lifts 50 mm midway, then retighten the lock nuts.
  3. When fully adjusted, remove two links from each side.

Tools: Spanners, Tape measure

Drive chain tension

Drive · every month

The bed chain drive chain should have 12 mm of movement midway between the sprockets. The layshaft to crossbeater chain deflection is in the handbook's Table 5, which I could not read, so check your handbook.

Step-by-step
  1. Remove the right-hand chain guard and release the two clamp bolts on the motor plate; jack it until the chain has 12 mm movement.
  2. For the crossbeater chain, open the hinged guard, loosen the four layshaft bolts, slacken the M16 locking nut and adjust the tension bolt, then retighten.

Tools: Spanners

PTO slip clutch check

Drive · every month

Check monthly and before use after a long idle: moisture can seize the discs. New friction linings are 3 mm. The clutch should just slip at 1,200 N·m.

Step-by-step
  1. Inspect the linings. Replace if damaged or worn. Dismantle and inspect the clutch at the start of each season.

Tools: Spanners, Torque or spring balance

Wheel nuts, tyres and hoses

Chassis · every month

Check wheel nuts before first use and daily (400 N·m on the 6-stud wheel in the 8500 handbook). Standard tyre on the 8100 is 10.0/75-15.3; the pressure table was not readable, so check your handbook.

Step-by-step
  1. Check nuts, tyre pressures and look over the hydraulic hoses.

Tools: Wheel brace, Tyre gauge

Hydraulic inline filter element

Hydraulics · every year

Replace the inline pressure filter element annually, where fitted.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the tailgate and deflectors fully before opening any hydraulic part, then change the element.

Tools: Spanners, Rags

Shear bolt check

Drive · when needed

After any blockage, check the shear bolt on the crossbeater drive. The handbook specifies an M8 x 50 mm bolt, grade 10.9 on feeder bedders. For the dual chop machines, check your handbook. Never fit a higher grade or a larger bolt: it risks gearbox damage and voids the warranty.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Switch off and wait for everything to stop.
  2. Open the left-hand hinged drive chain guard to reach the shear sprocket.
  3. Grease the sprocket hub and fit a new bolt of the correct grade.

Tools: Spanners, Grease gun

Crossbeater and dual chop blades

Cutter · when needed

Crossbeater blades can be turned to expose a fresh edge and replaced when both edges are blunt. Use the outer holes on the crossbeater rings for a more aggressive cut.

Step-by-step
  1. Wedge the rotor and crossbeaters so they cannot turn. Blades are very sharp.
  2. Turn or replace the blades with the 13 mm spanner (6 mm Allen key on dual chop blades).
  3. On a dual chop machine, lock the blade carrier with bars through the 19 mm holes and slide the beam out for fresh edges.

Tools: 13 mm ring spanner (long handle), 6 mm Allen key (long), Leather gloves, Wedges

Known problems

Straw in the chain grooves

If the bed chain runs tight, clear packed straw from the sprocket grooves and replace worn scrapers.

Rotor removal

The rotor releases from the main gearbox only with Teagle tool SC3776.
