Step-by-step
  1. Wipe each nipple before greasing and pump until clean grease comes out. Grease with the joints unloaded.
  2. Three-point linkage and towing hook.
  3. Brake mechanism (EP grease).
  4. Front axle brackets, plus the steering nipples and the non-powered front axle if fitted.
  5. While there: check the transmission oil level, fan belt tension, water trap and battery electrolyte, and clean the air filter cyclone on tractors with a horizontal filter.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 250 hours

The service manual says change the engine oil and filter every 250 hours. It also says to service more often in severe conditions.

  2. Remove the sump plug and drain the oil. It will be hot; wear gloves.
  3. Clean around the filter, unscrew it and throw it away. Look at the old oil and filter: a lot of dirt can point to a fault.
  4. Smear clean oil on the new filter's seal and screw it on by hand.
  5. Refit the sump plug and fill with ≈13 L of oil.
  6. Start the engine, check for leaks, stop it, wait a few minutes and check the dipstick.

Engine air filter: clean main element

Engine · every 250 hours

The service manual says clean the engine air filter every 250 hours. Tractors with a horizontal filter and ejector pipe also have the cyclone (suction housing hole plate) cleaned every 50 hours.

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and open the air filter housing.
  2. Take out the main element. Leave the inner safety element in place.
  3. Blow the main element out from the inside outwards with low-pressure air. Do not knock it against anything.

Known problems

Pressure filter first changes

The transmission pressure filters are first changed at 100 hours and again at 250 hours before the 500-hour pattern starts. On a second-hand tractor, change them if there is no record.

Transmission oil level on later tractors

Later frame numbers hold much more oil (45–55 L, extra max 65 L) than early ones (34 L). Check which you have before buying oil.

By-pass turbo rod

On DW (by-pass turbo) engines the turbo adjusting rod must be unhooked at the front before the valve cover comes off. Do not unhook it at the membrane box, or the opening pressure changes.

Turbocharger check

The service manual says have the turbocharger checked at a workshop every 4,000 hours.
