Service jobs and parts

Engine oil and filter change

Engine · every 600 hours

The engine oil and filter are changed every 600 hours on normal diesel. If you run first-generation biodiesel (B7) the interval drops to 250 hours. For a yearly change on low-hours tractors, check your handbook.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Engine oil filter1Included in Valtra 600-hour service kit ACP0484240; single filter number: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Run the engine to warm the oil, then park on level ground, lower implements and any loader to the ground, apply the parking brake, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let it stand for 10–15 minutes so the oil drains back but is not scalding. Wear gloves; hot oil burns. Keep clear of the exhaust and turbo.
  3. Remove the sump drain plug and let the oil drain fully.
  4. Remove the oil filter, check the old seal has come off, and wipe the filter head clean.
  5. Oil the new filter seal and fit it hand-tight as marked on the filter.
  6. Refit the drain plug with a new seal and fill with 15W-40 CR4 to the full mark.
  7. Run the engine for a minute, check for leaks, stop it, wait a few minutes and recheck the level.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Filter wrench, Spanner or socket for sump plug, Funnel, Rags, Gloves

Fuel filters (main and prefilter)

Fuel · every 600 hours

The Valtra dealer's 600-hour service kit includes the fuel filter kit, so the fuel filters are changed at each 600-hour service. Clean fuel protects the common-rail injectors and pump. Drain water from the prefilter whenever the warning shows.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Fuel filter kit1Included in Valtra 600-hour service kit ACP0484240; single numbers: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. No smoking or naked flames.
  2. Clean around the filters so dirt cannot get in.
  3. Drain the prefilter into a container, then remove the old elements, catching the fuel.
  4. Fit the new elements with new seals from the kit.
  5. Bleed the fuel system as your handbook describes.
  6. Start the engine, let it idle and check for leaks.

Tools: Container for fuel, Filter wrench, Rags

Engine air filter elements

Engine · every 600 hours

The Valtra dealer's 600-hour service kit includes both air filter elements, so they are renewed at each 600-hour service. In dusty work, check and empty the dust valve more often.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Air filter elements (outer and inner)2Included in Valtra 600-hour service kit ACP0484240; single numbers: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out. Never run the engine with the filter out.
  2. Open the air cleaner housing and take out the outer element, then the inner (safety) element.
  3. Wipe the inside of the housing with a damp cloth. Do not blow dirt down the intake.
  4. Fit the new elements and close the housing, checking the seals sit evenly.
  5. Check the intake hoses and clips for cracks or looseness.

Tools: Torch, Damp cloth

Hydraulic filter element

Hydraulics · every 600 hours

The Valtra dealer's 600-hour service kit includes a hydraulic filter element, so it is changed every 600 hours, twice as often as the transmission oil. It is also changed with the oil at every oil change.

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower the linkage and any loader fully to the ground, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. With the engine off, move the spool valve levers back and forth to relieve hydraulic pressure before opening anything.
  3. If the tractor has been working, let it cool for at least 30 minutes; hot oil under pressure can burn.
  4. Clean around the filter housing, remove the element and catch the oil.
  5. Fit the new element with the new seals from the kit.
  6. Start the engine, run it briefly, stop it and top up with XT60 to the correct level. Check for leaks.

Tools: Drain tray, Filter wrench or spanners, Rags, Gloves

Front PTO oil change (if fitted)

PTO · every 600 hours

Where a front PTO is fitted, its oil is changed every 600 hours and the level checked every 50 hours.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Park on level ground, lower implements, stop the engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Let hot axle oil cool before opening the plugs.
  3. Turn the front wheels so each hub plug is at the drain position shown in your handbook.
  4. Drain the differential and both hubs.
  5. Refit the drain plugs, then fill the differential and each hub to its level plug.
  6. Refit all plugs and wipe the axle clean so you can spot leaks later.

Tools: Drain tray, Spanners or hex keys, Oil pump or squeeze bottle

Transmission and hydraulic oil and filters change

Transmission · every 1,200 hours

The gearbox, back end and hydraulics share one oil. The HiTech schedule data gives a change every 1,200 hours. A Farmers Weekly article quotes 2,400 hours for Valtra transmissions in general, so use the shorter figure unless your handbook says otherwise. The hydraulic filter is changed with the oil.

  3. Drain the oil while it is warm but not hot: let the tractor stand 30 minutes after work. Wear gloves.
  4. Refit the drain plugs with new seals and fit the new filters.
  5. Fill with XT60 to the correct level, start the engine, work the linkage, loader and spools through their full travel, lower everything and recheck the level.
  6. Check all filters and plugs for leaks.

Tools: Large drain tray (70 L), Spanners, Filter wrench, Pump or funnel, Gloves

Coolant replacement

Cooling · every 2,400 hours or every 2 years

Coolant is changed every 2,400 hours or 2 years. Old coolant stops protecting against corrosion, liner pitting and frost.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Coolant1≈18 L; type: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Only work on a cold engine; leave it several hours after work. Open the expansion tank cap slowly to let any pressure out.
  2. Park on level ground, lower implements, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  3. Drain the radiator and engine block into a tray. Dispose of old coolant properly; it is poisonous to animals.
  4. Refit the drain plugs and fill with the coolant your handbook specifies.
  5. Run the engine to working temperature with the cab heater on to bleed air, let it cool and top up.

Tools: Drain tray (20 L), Hose, Coolant tester, Gloves

Cab air filter

Cab · when needed

The cab air filter is not in the dealer's 600-hour kit and is ordered separately. No change interval was found in a source: check your handbook. Change it sooner in dusty work or when spraying.

PartQtyNotesPart number

Step-by-step
  1. Stop the engine and take the key out.
  2. Open the cab filter cover and remove the element.
  3. Wear a dust mask. Fit the new filter the right way round, following any arrow on it, and refit the cover so it seals.

Tools: Screwdriver, Dust mask

AdBlue system check

Exhaust · when needed

The N4 engine uses SCR exhaust treatment, so it needs AdBlue (≈45 L tank). No interval for the AdBlue pump filter or tank breather was found: check your handbook.

  2. Fill only with clean AdBlue from a sealed container. Never put diesel in the AdBlue tank or AdBlue in the fuel tank.
  3. Wipe up spills with water; AdBlue crystallises and corrodes metal.
  4. Change the AdBlue filter at the interval in your handbook.

Tools: Clean AdBlue jug or nozzle, Rags

Known problems

Engine balancer unit seizure

If the engine is over-revved, for example going downhill with a heavy trailer, the balancer can seize. It has to be replaced, which means lifting the engine off the chassis (3–4 days).

Water pump and idler bearings

The water pump inner bearing is a common failure: the fan drops and catches the guard. Squeaking idler pulleys are another sign of worn bearings.

HiTech hydraulic pump

The single pump on HiTech tractors can fail, especially on loader tractors. Stiff steering is the early warning. Active, Versu and Direct use two pumps.

Front gearbox seal leak

The seal at the front of the gearbox can fail on any version. On HiTechs it leaks under the tractor; on others look for oil from the bell-housing hole.

Electrical faults

A faulty clutch pedal switch can stop the tractor starting or driving, and the seat CAN-bus loom can chafe and throw random error codes.

Brake pivots and early gearbox circlip

Keep the brake wing pivots greased or the brakes can stick on. Early tractors had a weak C/D range circlip that could break and lose drive; most were upgraded.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your tractor.
