Rotor gear and roller joint greasing

Gearbox · every 30 hours

Vicon: grease the two nipples on the rotor gear and the contact roller joint (if fitted) every 30 hours, before and after the season and after pressure washing.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Lower the rake to work position, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until the rotor has stopped.
  2. Clean the nipples and the grease gun nozzle.
  3. Give each bearing one or two strokes. Stop if you feel resistance on the second: too much grease forces the seals open and lets dirt in.
  4. Brush a little grease on the ends of the tine arms (the brush-symbol points), and check they move freely. Do this after every clean.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags, Brush

PTO shaft lubrication

PTO shaft · every 50 hours

Vicon: grease the joints and the profile tubes every 50 hours and the guard every 250 hours, plus before and after the season and after pressure washing.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine and take the key out. Wait until the rotor has stopped.
  2. Check all guard parts for wear and damage first, and replace damaged ones.
  3. Grease the joints and their couplings.
  4. Pull the shaft apart and grease the profile tubes.
  5. Grease the guard every 250 hours.
  6. Follow the PTO shaft maker's own manual as well.

Tools: Grease gun, Rags

Screw and tine arm bolt retightening

Tines · every year

Vicon: retighten all screws after the first 5 hours, then as often as use needs and at least once a season.

Step-by-step
  1. Lower the rake to work position, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and chock the wheels. Wait until the rotor has stopped.
  2. Tighten every screw to the table unless a figure is given: grade 8.8 M10 48 Nm, M12 85 Nm, M14 135 Nm, M16 210 Nm.
  3. Add 10% for safety bolts and lock nuts.
  4. On a new rake, do this after the first 5 hours.

Tools: Torque wrench, Spanners

Rotor gear oil level check

Gearbox · every year

The rotor gear runs in oil (SAE 90 GL-4, 6.2 L max). Vicon gives no change interval: check the level whenever there is oil on the check screw or rotor. Set here to once a year at the pre-season check.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Gear oil (top-up)1SAE 90 API GL-4. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Put the rake on level ground with the rotor level, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and chock the wheels.
  2. Look for oil streaks on the check screw or rotor.
  3. Undo the check screw. The oil should reach the bottom of the thread.
  4. If it is low, top up with SAE 90 GL-4 using an oil syringe.
  5. Refit the check screw. If the oil keeps dropping, find and fix the leak.

Tools: Spanners, Oil syringe, Rags, Spirit level

Tines and tine savers

Tines · every year

Broken tines left in the swath damage machines following behind. Vicon's optional tine savers catch broken-off parts, but must not be overtightened.

Known problems

Over-greasing

Vicon warns that too much grease forces the bearings open and lets dirt in. One or two strokes per nipple.

Oil on the rotor

Oil streaks on the check screw or rotor mean the oil-bath gear is losing oil. Check the level and find the leak.
