Knife and knife bolt check

Blades and skids · every 10 hours

Vicon: check bolts and nuts after the first hour and then every 10 hours, at 90 Nm for knife and disc bolts. Play between the bolt and the knife hole is dangerous. Fit new bolts and nuts with every second set of knives.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Knives1Genuine per Vicon parts book CM 247, series 14246-03, serial 1942-2133 (2009): long blade anticlockwise VN99358699 and clockwise VN99358700, 9 of each on the 6-disc cutterbar. Earlier CM 247 series may differVN99358699 / VN99358700
Knife bolts and nuts1Genuine per Vicon parts book CM 247, series 14246-03, serial 1942-2133 (2009): knife bolt M10x31 (18 fitted). Lock nut M10 KG01068861VN90081160
Step-by-step
  1. Put the cutterbar in work position, stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
  2. Wedge a piece of wood between the discs so they cannot turn.
  3. Check each knife and bolt. Look for play between the bolt and the knife hole.
  4. Knives have two edges. Turn blunt ones over and refit them on the same disc so it stays balanced. The arrow shows the direction of rotation.
  5. Clean round the nut and bolt seat before taking a bolt out.
  6. Use the correct knife length. Knives too long damage the bearings on the CM 147 and CM 217.
  7. Fit new bolts and nuts with every second set of knives.
  8. Tighten knife and disc bolts to 90 Nm, and the three support frame bolts to 160 Nm.

Tools: Knife spanner (supplied), Torque wrench (to 90 Nm), Piece of wood, Gloves

Cutterbar and gearbox oil level check

Gearbox · every 10 hours

Vicon says check the levels daily, the gearbox one day and the cutterbar the next. Never overfill: it overheats the bar and damages the seals.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Gear oil SAE 80W-90 GL-51Top-up only. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-5 80W-90check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Cutterbar: after mowing, stand the cutterbar upright and check the next morning when the oil has settled. It should be at the level plug opening (CM 147 has separate level and filler plugs; the others a combined one).
  2. Gearbox: set the cutterbar level and remove the gearbox level plug. Oil should reach the opening. The upper plug lets air out while filling.
  3. Top up only to the level. Never add more than prescribed.

Tools: Allen key (supplied), Spanners, Funnel

10-hour greasing

Frame · every 10 hours

Vicon: grease the main frame bar (2 nipples) and coupling shaft (4 nipples) every 10 hours, and oil the transport crank bearing and stop cam pivots daily.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Grease1check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
  2. Grease the two main frame bar nipples and the four coupling shaft nipples, and the outside of the coupling shaft inner tube.
  3. Oil the crank thrust bearing and the stop cam pivots.

Tools: Grease gun, Oil can

Cutterbar and gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every year

Vicon: change the gearbox and cutterbar oil at least once a year, topping up between. There is no filter.

PartQtyNotesPart number
Gear oil SAE 80W-90 GL-51Gearbox 0.25 L; cutterbar about 1.1–1.75 L depending on model (check your handbook). Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-5 80W-90check your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. In the evening, after work, remove the cutterbar drain plug with the Allen key and leave it to drain overnight.
  2. Next morning refit the plug and fill through the filler plug until oil reaches the level plug.
  3. Drain the gearbox through its level opening, then refill to the opening.
  4. Never overfill.

Tools: Allen key (supplied), Drain tray, Funnel

V-belt tension

Drive · every year

Vicon: check the V-belt tension regularly; about 15 mm deflection between the pulleys. Change all the belts at once. No hour interval is given.

PartQtyNotesPart number
V-belts1Genuine per Vicon parts book CM 247, series 14246-03, serial 1942-2133 (2009): V-belt B2360, 4 fitted, drive group. Earlier series: check your parts bookVN43301603
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the PTO and engine, take the key out and wait until the discs have stopped.
  2. Press each belt midway between the pulleys: it should deflect about 15 mm.
  3. To adjust, slacken the bearing plate bolts, turn the tensioning nut, then retighten the bolts.
  4. Replace belts as a full set, since new and old belts differ in length.

Known problems

Wrong knife length

CM 147/217 take 107 mm knives and CM 167/247 take 120 mm. Longer knives damage the bearings.

Overfilled cutterbar

Too much oil overheats the cutterbar and blows the seals.

Discs out of time

The discs must be timed to each other. If a disc is refitted, check the timing in your handbook.

Repair guides

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your implement.
