Service jobs and parts
Gearbox oil change
Gearbox · every year
Welger: first change after the first 10 hours, then at the end of every season. Check the level regularly. About 1 litre of SAE 90 hypoid oil. There is no filter.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hypoid gear oil | 1 | SAE 90 (EP 90), ≈1 L. Aztec Oils match: TRANSMATEC EP-4 90 | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Wait until the flywheel has stopped completely: it keeps turning for a while after the PTO is off.
- Take off the crank guard.
- Remove the filler bolt (with breather), the level bolt and the drain bolt, and drain the oil.
- Clean and refit the drain bolt.
- Fill with SAE 90 hypoid oil until it reaches the level bolt hole (about 1 L), then refit the level and filler bolts.
- Refit the crank guard before running the baler.
- New or rebuilt gearbox: change the oil after the first 10 hours.

Knotter shaft lubrication and knotter settings (end of season)
Knotters and needles · every year
Welger asks for the twine retainer and knotter bill shafts to be coated with lithium grease after every season. It also gives the knotter settings to check, and says the knotter beaks and twine retainers must be clean before work.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lithium grease | 1 | Light coat only | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Wait until the flywheel has stopped completely.
- Set the knotter trip safety latch to 'Aus' (off), so the needles can't come up while you work.
- Wear gloves: the knotter knife and needle tips are sharp.
- Loosen the lock nut and bolts, take off the leaf spring and remove the knotter unit as the manual shows.
- Knock out the expanding pins, pull out the twine retainer and knotter bill, put a light coat of lithium grease on the shafts and wipe off the excess.
- Keep grease off the retainer taper and the twine clamp: grease there lets the twine slip and the knots fail.
- Refit everything with the pins in the right pinion positions.
- Check the settings: twine tensioner spring length 26 mm; twine flicker gap 1–2 mm at its forward position; twine guide plate gap 1.5–2.5 mm; twine retainer spring preloaded 5 mm (bolt down to the spring, then 3½ turns).
- Turn the flywheel by hand only, with the PTO shaft off the tractor.
- Before the next season, clean the knotter beaks and twine retainers so the twine is held and can't wind round the retainer shaft.

Slip clutch and shear bolt check (before the season)
Drive · every year
Welger asks for the front overrun clutch plates to be taken out and cleaned before each season. A clutch that has stuck with rust or grease will not slip, and the shear bolt then takes every shock. If the shear bolt breaks too often, the cone clutch linings need cleaning.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main drive shear bolt | 2 | M7 × 50, DIN 931, grade 8.8, with M7 nut and A7 spring washer (DIN 127). AP 42/53 double clutch | check your handbook |
| Needle shear bolt | 1 | Welger genuine | 0901.98.10.00 |
| Emery paper | 1 | For cleaning clutch faces | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Take the PTO shaft off the tractor, stop the engine and take the key out. Wait until the flywheel has stopped completely.
- AP 42/53: remove the clutch plates (2) of the front overrun clutch and clean any grease off the faces with emery paper. Refit them.
- Don't remove the plate spring completely. The torque is set at the factory; only reset it if the plates are worn, using the shims behind or in front of the spring.
- Check the shear bolt behind the flywheel is an M7 × 50 grade 8.8. Never fit a stronger bolt. Carry spares.
- AP 38/48 have a single slip clutch with a shear bolt instead: check it the same way.
- Needle shear bolt: if it has broken, take out the expanding pin and pin, free the needle lift rod, remove the broken bolt and fit a new Welger bolt 0901.98.10.00. Tighten it carefully.
- Pick-up slip clutch: set to 300–450 Nm. Never lock it solid.
- Refit all guards before the PTO shaft goes back on.
Tools: Spanners, Pin punch, Emery paper, Rags
Start-of-season checks
Storage · every year
Welger's preparation steps and its rule to tighten all bolts and nuts after the first 20 working hours. The PTO shaft overlap and the 540 rpm speed matter on these balers.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |
|---|---|---|---|
| Baling twine | 4 | Best quality. AP 53 extra box holds 4 more | check your handbook |
Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, disengage the PTO, stop the tractor engine, take the key out and apply the brakes. Wait until the flywheel has stopped.
- Clean the protective grease off the tractor and baler PTO splines.
- Check the PTO shaft: 330–600 mm between the PTO end and the drawbar hole, and at least 300 mm of tube overlap when driving straight. Shorten the inner and outer tubes by the same amount if needed.
- Fit the PTO shaft so the slide pins snap in at both ends and fix the guard chain to the drawbar.
- Clean the knotter beaks and twine retainers.
- Put 4 twine balls side by side, upright, in the twine box, and thread them as the manual shows.
- Grease all points with lithium grease until old grease comes out of the bearing sides. Clean each nipple first. Never grease the baler while it is running.
- Check the lights and indicators work and are clean. Carry two wheel chocks on the baler.
- Check the PTO speed with a watch from time to time: 540 rpm gives 100 ram strokes a minute.
- New or repaired baler: tighten all bolts and nuts inside and outside after the first 20 working hours.
Tools: Spanners, Grease gun (lithium grease), Tape measure, Watch
After-season maintenance
Storage · every year
Welger's after-season list, so the knotters and moving parts don't rust or stick over winter.
| Part | Qty | Notes | Part number |

Known problems
Never clear the packer by reversing the PTO
Welger warns that reversing the PTO bends the leaf spring of the packer's automatic release. If the packer tines kick back five or six times in a row, stop the PTO and engine, take the key out, wait for the flywheel to stop and clear the feed table by hand.
Flywheel keeps turning
The flywheel runs on after the PTO is off. Wait until it has stopped completely before going near the knotters, needles or plunger.
Wrong shear bolt
Use only M7 × 50 grade 8.8 (main drive) and the genuine needle bolt. A harder bolt lets a jam break the needles or gearbox.
Sharp turns
Disengage the PTO before sharp turns unless you have the wide-angle shaft (up to 70°).
Repair guides
- Knotter mis-tying: knotter beak (bill hook), twine retainer and twine tension (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Bales with one or both strings untied, loose loops, frayed or torn twine ends, knots that slip under strain, twine wound round the retainer shaft.
- Needle setting and needle-to-ram timing check (Specialist, 2–4 hours): Needles hitting the ram, broken needle shear bolt, bent needles, twine not delivered to the knotter, knots missing after a jam.
- Main drive shear bolt and slip clutch service (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Ram stops and the shear bolt behind the flywheel is broken, bolts shearing too often, slip clutch slipping or never slipping.
- Packer tines kicking back: clearing the feed table safely (Easy, 15–45 minutes): Packer tines swing back again and again, crop bunching on the feed table, pick-up stopping.
- Ram (plunger) guides, knife setting and bale density (Moderate, 2–4 hours): Ragged bale ends, heavy laboured running, ram knocking or with side play, soft or curved bales, ram stalling.
- PTO shaft knocking on turns: length, overlap and angles (Easy, 30–90 minutes): PTO shaft knocks or vibrates on turns, shaft bottoming out or pulling apart, worn joints.
- PTO shaft repair: universal joint cross and bearing, and guard replacement (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Play or clicking in a universal joint, rust coming out of the bearing cups, vibration, split or worn guard cones, guard not turning freely, missing chain.
- Tyre and wheel bearing checks and repair (Moderate, 1–2 hours per wheel): Wheel wobbling or growling, hub hot after work, grease thrown out of the hub, soft or cut tyre, wheel nuts loose.
