Service jobs and parts

Daily greasing and blade look-over

Chassis · every 10 hours

Wessex's lubrication schedule says grease the roller bearings every day and inspect the blades every day.

PartQtyNotesPart number
General-purpose grease1Grade not given in the manual: check your handbookcheck your handbook
Step-by-step
  1. Stop the PTO and the engine, take the key out and wait for the blades to stop. Lift the topper on stands if you need to look underneath. Never work under an unsupported machine.
  2. Grease the front and rear roller bearings.
  3. Look at every blade for chips, cracks and bends and check none is missing.

Tools: Grease gun, Rag, Gloves

Blades, blade bolts and balance

Blades and skids · every 25 hours

Wessex: inspect the blades regularly and replace any that are worn, chipped or broken, because they put the rotors out of balance. Always replace the blades on both ends of a bar together, and fit new nylock nuts every time a blade tip is changed. Running with unbalanced rotors damages the machine and is not covered by warranty. The manual gives no bolt torque.

Step-by-step
  1. Raise the topper and support it on axle stands. Never get under it on a jack alone.
  2. Check each blade tip and bar for chips, cracks, bending and wear.
  3. Change both tips on a bar together so the rotor stays balanced. Fit new nylock nuts every time.
  4. Turn each rotor by hand to check it spins freely and nothing rubs.
  5. Lower the topper and, after the first few minutes of work, check for vibration.

Tools: Axle stands or blocks, Spanners, Torque wrench (the manual gives no figure: check your handbook), Gloves

Weekly greasing and gearbox level check

Chassis · every 40 hours or every month

Wessex lists these as weekly: grease the height adjustment points, the cutter spindle bearings, the PTO shaft bearings and the PTO tube slides, lubricate the adjusting threads and check the gearbox oil level. The manual gives no hour figure; this entry uses about 40 hours or a month.

PartQtyNotesPart number

  2. Grease the height adjustment points, each of the three cutter spindle bearings, the PTO shaft bearings and the two sliding tubes of the PTO shaft.
  3. Put a few drops of oil on the adjusting threads.
  4. Check the gearbox oil level at its plug and top up with EP90 if it is low.

Tools: Grease gun, Oil can, Spanners, Rag

PTO shaft check

PTO shaft · every 40 hours

Wessex manual: grease the sliding profiles and the shaft bearings weekly, fit the safety chains so the shaft can bend freely without wrapping the guard, and use the support hook rather than hanging the shaft on its chains. This entry uses about 40 hours for the weekly interval.

Step-by-step
  1. Pull the two halves apart and grease the sliding profiles.
  2. Grease the universal joints and guard bearings.
  3. Check the guard is whole and turns freely, and the safety chains are fitted and not wound round the guard.
  4. When fitting to a new tractor, hold the half-shafts side by side at their shortest working length and shorten the guard tubes and the sliding profiles by the same amount, then deburr the cut ends.

Tools: Grease gun, Spanners, Hacksaw (only if you shorten the shaft)

Drive belts and belt covers

Drive · every 50 hours

Wessex: check all drive belts for tension and replace any that are cut, frayed or worn, and keep debris cleaned out from under the belt covers. The belts are tensioned by moving the gearbox with its adjuster nut and checked by belt deflection. The manual gives no deflection figure, so this entry uses 50 hours and tells you to check your handbook for the deflection.

  4. Check the tension by pressing on the belt. To adjust, move the gearbox with the adjuster nut, then tighten the gearbox fixings.
  5. Refit the covers.

Tools: Spanners, Straight edge, Rag

Rollers and scraper wires

Wessex lists the front and rear rollers and the scraper wires as a regular inspection item. It gives no hour figure; this entry uses 50 hours.

  4. Replace any worn scraper wire or bearing.

Tools: Spanners, Grease gun, Gloves

Gearbox oil change

Gearbox · every year

Wessex says to top up or change the gearbox oil with EP90 before winter storage, depending on the hours worked. It gives no hour interval and no quantity, so this entry uses once a year. There is no oil filter.

  4. Refit the cap and look for leaks at the seals.

Tools: Drain tray (3 L), Spanners, Funnel, Rag

Known problems

Unbalanced rotor

A missing or chipped blade shakes the machine and can wreck the spindle bearings. Wessex says this damage is not covered by warranty, so stop and check as soon as you feel vibration.

Gearbox oil quantity

The manual only says EP90 and gives no fill quantity or change interval. Check the level plug every week and keep records of your own oil changes.
