Daily checks and greasing

General · every 10 hours

Wessex lists these daily: grease the roller bearings, inspect the blades and check the gearbox oil level (the daily inspection record asks for the oil check every day, the lubrication page says weekly). It also asks you to re-tighten bolts and nuts as required.

Weekly greasing

Chassis · every 40 hours or every month

Wessex weekly list: height adjustment points, cutter spindle bearings, PTO shaft bearings, PTO tube slides and wing release cables, plus lubricating all adjusting threads. The manual gives no hour figure; this entry uses about 40 hours or a month.

Deck drive belts

Drive · every 50 hours

Wessex: the drive belts are tensioned by adjusting the jockey pulleys, which you reach by taking off the belt guards. Slipping belts cause a poor cut. The manual gives no hour interval, so this entry uses 50 hours. Belt part numbers are on page 20 of the manual: check your handbook.

Tyres and road travel check

Wessex gives the tyre pressure as 4.5 bar (65 psi) and a maximum road speed of 40 km/h. Check the tyres and the transport locks before every road journey.

Step-by-step
  1. Check the tyres for cuts and set them to 4.5 bar (65 psi).
  2. Check the wheel nuts are tight and the lights and brakes work.

Tools: Tyre pressure gauge, Torque wrench (wheel nuts: check your handbook)

Gearbox oil change (deck and wing gearboxes)

Gearbox · every year

Wessex says to top up or change the gearbox oil with EP90 before winter storage, depending on the hours worked. No hour interval or quantity is given, so this entry uses once a year. There is no oil filter, but the deck gearbox has an oil filler plug.

Known problems

Oil level check frequency

The lubrication page says check the gearbox oil weekly but the daily inspection record asks for it daily. Daily is the safer habit on a machine this size.

Unbalanced rotors

A missing blade shakes the whole deck. Stop and fix it before carrying on; Wessex does not cover damage from unbalanced rotors.

The full step-by-step guides are in Farmyard Workshop once you add your implement.
