Yamaha's chart says change the oil every 2,500 km (1,600 mi), 160 hours or 6 months, after a first change at 320 km, 20 hours or 1 month. Yamaha only asks for a new filter cartridge every 5,000 km, 320 hours or 12 months; here it is changed every time, as it costs little.

Step-by-step
- Park on level ground, engine off, key out, parking brake on. Hot oil and exhaust burn, so wear gloves.
- Remove the access cover and dipstick, put the tray under the engine and remove the drain bolt and gasket.
- Remove panel F, then unscrew the oil filter cartridge with a filter wrench.
- Oil the O-ring on the new cartridge, check it is seated, and screw it on. Tighten to 17 N·m.
- Refit panel F. Fit the drain bolt with a new gasket at 30 N·m.
- Fill with about 2.10 L of the right oil. Do not add oil additives: the oil also lubricates the clutch.
- Start and check for leaks, stop, then check the level is between the dipstick marks. Refit the access cover.
- Take the old oil to a proper disposal point.

- Pull off the plug cap and unscrew the plug.
- Clean or replace it if fouled or worn.
- Set the gap to 0.8–0.9 mm.

- After wading, remove the V-belt case drain plug under the case. If water comes out, refit the plug and have a dealer check the quad, as water may have reached other parts.

- Remove the filler bolt and the drain bolt and let the oil drain. Refit the drain bolt with a new gasket.
- Remove the level check bolt and fill until oil reaches the brim of the check hole (about 0.20 L).
- Refit the level check bolt at 10 N·m and the filler bolt at 23 N·m, with sound gaskets.

- Only open the cooling system when the engine is cold.
- Yamaha lists the full coolant change as a dealer job; follow your handbook or service manual for draining and bleeding.
- Top up through the reservoir to the maximum mark. In an emergency use distilled or soft tap water, never hard or salt water, and have the antifreeze strength checked soon after.
- Catch and dispose of old coolant properly.

Air filter (foam) clean and oil

Yamaha says clean the air filter every 20–40 hours, more often in wet or dusty conditions. Yamaha gives no km or month figure, so the app cannot time this one: check it at every oil check and after dusty work.

Step-by-step
- Engine off and key out. Remove the seat.
- Unhook the holders and remove the air filter case cover.
- Lift out the sponge and the mesh. Clean the mesh with solvent and wipe it dry.
- Wash the sponge gently in parts-cleaning solvent. Never use petrol or low-flash-point solvent: the engine could catch fire.
- Squeeze it out without twisting it, let it dry and replace it if damaged.
- Oil it with foam air filter oil: wet but not dripping.
- Refit the mesh and sponge, making sure they seat properly. Never run the engine without the filter.
- Refit the cover and hook the holders on.

Known problems
Water in the V-belt case
Wading deep enough lets water into the belt case, making the belt slip. Drain it with the belt case drain plug and have a dealer check if water came out.
Dirty air filter
Yamaha asks for the filter to be cleaned every 20–40 hours. On a dusty or muddy farm it can block much sooner and the engine loses power.
Oil filter only every other change
Yamaha's chart only asks for a new filter every second oil change. Many owners change it every time to be safe.
Wrong oil makes the clutch slip
The oil also lubricates the clutch. Do not use oil additives or energy-conserving car oils.
Old brake hoses and fluid
Yamaha says change the brake fluid every 2 years and the hoses every 4 years. These are often forgotten on farm quads.
Repair guides
- Clutch slip from the wrong engine oil (CVT quads) (Easy, 1 hour): Engine revs flare without drive, jerky take-off or creeping, especially after an oil change or an oil additive.
- Water in the CVT belt case after wading (Easy, 30 minutes): Engine revs but the quad crawls or will not pull after crossing water; squealing belt; water comes out of the belt case drain.
- Loss of power from a blocked air filter (main and sub filter) (Easy, 45 minutes plus drying): Sluggish pulling, black smoke or poor running in dust, harvest or muddy work well before the next service.
- Brake fluid change and brake hose replacement (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Dark fluid in the reservoir, spongy lever or pedal, hoses cracked or swollen, or no record of a fluid change in the last 2 years.
- Final gear and differential oil leaks, milky oil and wrong oil (Yamaha) (Moderate, 1 hour for oil; 3–5 hours for a seal): Oil weeping round a drive shaft or axle seal, milky gear oil after wet work, rear judder or noise, or the wrong oil used in the Kodiak final gear.
- CV boots and drive shafts (Yamaha and Suzuki) (Hard, 2–3 hours per shaft): Torn boot with grease flung round the wheel arch, clicking on full lock, knock when taking up drive.
- Wheel bearing check and replacement (Moderate, 1.5–3 hours per wheel): Wheel rocks top to bottom when gripped, rumble or growl that changes on turns, uneven tyre wear or a hub running hot.
- Ball joints, tie-rod ends and toe setting (Moderate, 1–2 hours per side): Steering wander or knock over bumps, play when you rock a front wheel side to side, split rubber boots on the joints, or front tyres scrubbing.
- Disc brake pads, discs and caliper slide pins (Moderate, 1–2 hours per axle): Grinding or squeal, pads down to the wear grooves, lever travel growing, brake pulling to one side, or a caliper sticking and the wheel running hot.
- Will not crank or cranks slowly: battery, connections and starter motor (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Click and nothing, slow cranking, starter spins without turning the engine, or starting only works on the recoil.
- CVT drive belt inspection and replacement (Hard, 2–3 hours): Jerky take-off, slipping under load, burning smell, squeal, loss of top speed, or a belt that is cracked, glazed or narrowed.
- Overheating: cooling fan, radiator and cap (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Temperature warning light, coolant boiling into the reserve tank, fan not running when hot, or (TRX350) oil running hot with the oil cooler fan silent.
- Valve clearance check and adjustment (screw and lock nut rockers) (Moderate, 1.5–2.5 hours): Ticking from the top end, hard hot starting, loss of compression or power, or the check is due on the maintenance chart.
- Winch will not pull, runs one way only, or runs weak (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Nothing happens at the switch, the winch only runs in or only out, motor hums but the drum does not turn, slow line speed, or the winch got soaked.
