Engine oil, filter and strainer change

Yamaha's chart says change the oil every 2,500 km (1,600 mi), 160 hours or 6 months, after a first change at 240 km, 20 hours or 1 month. Yamaha asks for a new filter cartridge and a strainer clean only every 5,000 km, 320 hours or 12 months; here the filter is changed every time, as it costs little.

Step-by-step
- Park on level ground. Warm the engine for a few minutes, then stop it, take the key out and set the parking brake. Wear gloves: oil and exhaust are hot.
- Remove panel E and the oil filler cap, put the tray under the engine and remove the drain bolt and gasket.
- Remove panels C and D and unscrew the filter cartridge with a filter wrench.
- Oil the O-ring of the new cartridge, check it is seated, screw it on and tighten to 17 N·m. Refit panels D and C.
- Fit the drain bolt with a new gasket at 27 N·m.
- Fill with about 2.40 L of the right oil. No additives, and no CD diesel or energy-conserving oils, or the clutch may slip.
- Every 12 months the engine oil strainer should also be cleaned. Yamaha lists this as a dealer job.
- Run the engine, check for leaks, stop it and check the level: the oil should be between the dipstick tip and the maximum mark with the cap resting in, not screwed in.

Spark plug check

- After wading, drain the V-belt case through its drain plug. If water comes out, have a dealer check the quad.

Air filter and sub air filter clean and oil

Yamaha says clean the air filter and the sub air filter every 20–40 hours, more often in wet or dusty conditions. Yamaha gives no km or month figure, so the app cannot time this one: check it at every oil check and after dusty work.

Step-by-step
- Engine off, key out. Open the air filter case as your handbook shows.
- Take out the element and the sub air filter element.
- Wash the sponge gently in parts-cleaning solvent, never petrol. Squeeze it without twisting and let it dry.
- Replace it if torn. Oil it with foam filter oil so it is wet but not dripping.
- Refit both elements so they seat properly and refit the cover. Never run without the filter.

Known problems
Water in the V-belt case
Wading lets water into the belt case and the belt slips. Drain it through the drain plug and have a dealer check if water came out.
Two air filters to clean
The Kodiak has a sub air filter as well as the main one, and Yamaha asks for both to be cleaned every 20–40 hours.
Wrong oil makes the clutch slip
Yamaha warns against oil additives, CD diesel oils and ENERGY CONSERVING II oils because the oil also lubricates the clutch.
Wrong rear gear oil
The final gear needs Yamaha friction-modified shaft drive oil, and it is changed every 6 months on this model, more often than on the Grizzly 700.
Oil strainer forgotten
As well as the filter, the engine oil strainer should be cleaned every 12 months. It is easily missed.
Repair guides
- Clutch slip from the wrong engine oil (CVT quads) (Easy, 1 hour): Engine revs flare without drive, jerky take-off or creeping, especially after an oil change or an oil additive.
- Water in the CVT belt case after wading (Easy, 30 minutes): Engine revs but the quad crawls or will not pull after crossing water; squealing belt; water comes out of the belt case drain.
- Loss of power from a blocked air filter (main and sub filter) (Easy, 45 minutes plus drying): Sluggish pulling, black smoke or poor running in dust, harvest or muddy work well before the next service.
- Engine oil strainer clean (Kodiak 450) (Moderate, 1–1.5 hours): Strainer not cleaned in the last 12 months, or oil pressure or noise worries after running on sludgy oil.
- Brake fluid change and brake hose replacement (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Dark fluid in the reservoir, spongy lever or pedal, hoses cracked or swollen, or no record of a fluid change in the last 2 years.
- Final gear and differential oil leaks, milky oil and wrong oil (Yamaha) (Moderate, 1 hour for oil; 3–5 hours for a seal): Oil weeping round a drive shaft or axle seal, milky gear oil after wet work, rear judder or noise, or the wrong oil used in the Kodiak final gear.
- CV boots and drive shafts (Yamaha and Suzuki) (Hard, 2–3 hours per shaft): Torn boot with grease flung round the wheel arch, clicking on full lock, knock when taking up drive.
- Disc brake pads, discs and caliper slide pins (Moderate, 1–2 hours per axle): Grinding or squeal, pads down to the wear grooves, lever travel growing, brake pulling to one side, or a caliper sticking and the wheel running hot.
- Will not crank or cranks slowly: battery, connections and starter motor (Moderate, 1–3 hours): Click and nothing, slow cranking, starter spins without turning the engine, or starting only works on the recoil.
- CVT drive belt inspection and replacement (Hard, 2–3 hours): Jerky take-off, slipping under load, burning smell, squeal, loss of top speed, or a belt that is cracked, glazed or narrowed.
- Winch will not pull, runs one way only, or runs weak (Moderate, 1–2 hours): Nothing happens at the switch, the winch only runs in or only out, motor hums but the drum does not turn, slow line speed, or the winch got soaked.
